Benaguacil, cavehouse

about the property

A traditional Spanish cavehouse holiday cottage rental with wonderful views. Perfect for two, and with WIFI, this Galera holiday cave is affordable and the perfect base for you Andalucian holiday – near geothermal springs and with direct access to miles of wonderful walking.

Benaguacil is a traditional cavehouse with original features, fine mountain views in a conservation village, and c.320 days of sun a year. Walk to the local outdoor swimming pool or restaurants, take a short drive to great natural lake bathing or head out to the sandy beaches of the coast. There isn't much not to like about this part of Spain; fantastic and varied landscapes, friendly people, great regional food at fair prices, and weather that almost always brings a smile to your face. So put the kettle on and watch this mini-video filmed in the village. Benaguacil is great for a romantic holiday for couples.

Check out our Facebook album for extra photos - we often take our own holidays here!

Benaguacil is in the heart of the conservation area at Galera, the most celebrated of the Andalucian cave 'towns'. The council here strictly controls development, restricting any new building, and making sure that any changes to existing houses doesn't detract from the character of the neighbourhood. We chose ths cave, and Perez de Hita next door, as they retained good original C19 features such as the fireplaces and alabaster kitchen sink, and also because it was one of those houses that feels good from the moment you arrive 'home'. It sits on a very quiet dead-end road high enough up the hill to get the fine mountain views, but still close enough to walk into 'town' (some would say 'village') for lunch, shopping or a dip in the municipal open-air pool. Free WIFI included!

The beauty of these caves that even in the heat of August they remain deliciously cool inside without any need for fans or air conditioning, and in winter when it snows they remain a constant 13>17 degrees even before you light the fire. Trips out will include freshwater bathing lakes, geothermal pools, many pretty towns, or to the amazing Alhambra in Granada.

You get 320 days of sunshine a year in this area (compared to around 40 in the UK), and there's a bath on the terrace for you to cool off on the hot ones. Even in August the cave will remain refreshingly cool without any need for air conditioning.

Benaguacil is a simple, relaxing place to stay. It faces south so you migrate to the patio at the front and watch the colours change on the mountain landscape as the day progresses. Why not time your holiday to coincide with one of the local fiestas? particularly impressive are the Easter passion plays and parades, and those around 5th January for the 'Three Kings'.

travel info

We can put you in touch with a good, reliable English-speaking taxi guy who lives locally who (if available) will collect you from the airport etc. Arrange direct with Tony. Once there you can walk to bars and restaurants and shops, but you'll probably want a car in any case.

  • Granada - 150 km, 1hr 35mins (BA flies to London City, Easyjet flies to Gatwick)
  • Murcia - 195km, 2 hr, 10mins.
  • Almeria - 195 km, 2 hr (many inc. Jet2 who fly to Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, East Midlands & Newcastle)
  • Alicante - 220 km, 2hr 20mins (Ryanair + many others also often cheap)
  • Malaga - 260km, 2hr 35mins (Ryanair + many others)
  • Albacete - 220km, 2hr 30mins (Iberia flights only)

Skyscanner is a good place to start looking for flights as there are a huge number of providers in this area, beyond the usual Ryanair etc. Each airport website will have a destination map so you can see who flies to your area. The roads from all airports are good, being almost all dual-carriageway, and rarely busy. Driving is much less stressful here than in the UK!

The local bus service is good, though you may find a hirecar useful. For buses this site is useful (bus to Cullar or Huescar - we may be able to arrange a pick-up if arranged in advance). Or it makes a remarkable drive from the UK. Why not ferry to Santander and then trickle down through Spain?. We've had guests stay with us in Barcelona and then take the amazing roadtrip down through Spain to stay here.

customer reviews for Benaguacil, cavehouse

We loved our cavehouse holiday here! The cave is small but has everything you need, and you're close enough to walk either down into Galera town or for miles across the plateau. Some lovely people around too, we had no problem and have no Spanish ourselves. Last year we paid three times what we paid here, for an apartment on the coast which wasn't half as nice! - Jane & Steve

We really enjoyed our stay here. We've been in Andalucia lots of times but this area is new to us. We took it easy, lots of walks, visited the archaeological dig, and wandered around the village. We enjoyed the museum and even though there was ice on some of the paths in the village our south-facing patio always was warm in full sun. - Anne & Bryan, West of Scotland

February 2017

The cave is lovely inside- very traditional and cute, with everything you need for your holiday (note there is not an oven- there is a grill and a hot plate though). The views are wonderful and there is the most amazing scenery in the local area. We visited Castril (check the castle opening times- they're limited in July/August/September), walked the gorge walk, drove to the lake to swim, went to the little museum in Galera and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine outside the cave, which faces south. A great experience and a beautiful area of the country. Recommend to combine with a couple of nights in Granada to get a great idea of this beautiful part of the world.

December 2015

We had been considering a stay in a cave house for a while and the Benaguacil cave house did not disappoint. The interior is stylish and sophisticated yet works perfectly in the unique space, making for a home away from home. The external space is compact yet perfect for alfresco dining or enjoying the sun, the views over the hillsides or the wonderful night skies. The outdoor bath must be a big bonus in summer months too. The position of the cave means that you do have neighbours but you are not over looked and the road outside is rarely used. I believe we saw 1 car in the 9 days there. The car park is above the cave, so there are no cars parked on the road outside the property, interrupting the view. The pretty and friendly town of Galera has everything you need. Good supermarkets, butchers, bakers, chemists etc. There is a great little food market on Wednesdays too. The walk into the town is very pretty, the walk back to the cave is quite steep and therefore somewhat exhilarating! Surrounding bronze age sites make for really interesting nearby excursions. Slightly further a field are many towns to explore and lakes and geothermal pools to swim in. Gregg was the perfect host too.Personable , friendly communication before, during and after the trip have ensured we had a positive, relaxed and unforgettable experience. We will definitely be back to Galera and look forward to experiencing other Under The Thatch properties in the future.
