Conserving an historic underthatch

The thatch on this granite shed had long rotted to grass before we came along….and given its exposed Atlantic location rethatching isnt viable at c1000 euro per year of thatch life…..but we have repaired the collapsed section using historic material from a long lost roof….and capped the rest in a tin roof for posterity. We will paint it oxide green when we finish.

This week we’re painting the tin roof of Miki’s cottage oxide red…our most commonly used gloss colour. Makes a difference eh? Cottage will launch this summer. Has own beach!

Been to visit this house in Carmarthenshire

We went to visit this traditional house in Carmarthenshire with a view to taking it on UTT 🙂 …What a great job I have!
It has lovely views across the countryside and is close to Cardigan Bay and the great beaches there – perfect!
Keep an eye out for updates – We have some exciting newbies coming up very soon…

before..and after utt renovation

this early C19 hearth was having a bad time…covered in cement and gypsum plaster that made it damp, filled in with concrete blocks, and with a range so full of water that it fell apart in our hands. We removed the 1980s ceilings, replaced and insulated the dry-lining and lime-pointed up the hearth wall.
It isn’t finished yet….but it is getting there!
