about the property

Bespoke lakeside shepherd's hut on the shore with cool outdoor 'cube' for fireside evenings overlooking the bay, on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way!

We're lucky enough to own a wonderful piece of land on Traighenna Bay, a sheltered stretch of water on Ireland's famous 'Wild Atlantic Way'. We've designed and built 'Lakeside Luna' to sit on the edge of a beautiful pool, and also 'Kuba' alongside where guests can enjoy their evenings undercover with a wood-burning stove. It's an entirely self-contained private unit that is comfortable all year round.

Luna has been carefully designed to contain all the essentials - a quality (full-size) double bed, fridge, cooker etc, and a small shower and toilet room inside. Outside you've decking and Kuba, an 'outdoor cube' we designed so you could enjoy the views fireside in any weather.

A 5-minute drive will take you to Dooey beach (one of the finest in Ireland) or there are smaller, sandy beaches on the way. You can walk to the shore from Luna, but it's best to nip into the car for the really nice sandy beaches. Locally you'll find an amazing coastline, small-towns, good food, Glenveigh National Park and plenty to fill weeks of day trips.

travel info

You can easily fly by low-cost carrier but we prefer the greener (and nicer) route by ferry with your own car. Ireland is such an amazing country, and you'll find so much to do and see 'en route'.

Note Aer Lingus often have deals as cheap as Ryanair/ Easyjet and fly to 15 UK airports

Fly to:

  • Donegal - flights to Dublin and Glasgow with Flybe (25-minute fabulous coastal drive to the cottage)
  • Derry (Londonderry) via Glasgow, Liverpool (with Ryanair) and London City (BMI) 1hr. 25 mins. away) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast International via these departure airports & Easyjet & Ryanair (2 hr. 25 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast City via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 35 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Knock via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 15 min.)
  • Dublin via these departure airports & Ryanair (3 hr. 25 min.)

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away)
  • Larne via Fleetwood (2 hr. 40 mins.)
  • Dublin via Holyhead/ Douglas (3 hr. 30 min.)
  • Dun Laoghaire via Holyhead (3 hr. 35 mins.)
  • Rosslare via Fishguard/ Pembroke Dock (5 hr. 15 mins and an amazing drive)
(Tip - ferries cheapest Mon > Thu)

local area

You're right on one of the most beautiful shorelines in the world. Most people spend their days discovering the many beaches (there are hundreds), the great local food and welcome in the pubs and walking across 'wilderness' landscapes.

  • Dooey Beach - 5km of sandy beach (also walking distance) - known for surfing  (5-minute drive).
  • Lettermacaward - 5-minute drive - your village with 2 shops, petrol, hairdressers, pubs
  • Dungloe town - a 12-minute drive - 'Capital of the Rosses' with supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, Supervalu, The Cope), pubs (10) and the Daniel O'Donnell Visitor Centre
  • Maghery Beach - horse-riding on the beach - 20 mins. drive
  • Sliabh Liag - Europe's highest sea cliffs (amazing) - 45 mins. drive
  • Horse Riding at Dunlewey - 40 mins. - also, kids play park and mini zoo there.
  • Glenveagh National Park / National Park  - 45 mins
  • Belfast city - 2hr 35 mins.
  • Ardara 'Heritage Town' (cafes, pubs, tweed/weaving) - 20 mins.
  • Donegal County & Events Guide
  • Local angling, boat trips & local walking (video)
  • Glencolmcille Folk Village & beach & pubs - 55 mins.
  • Ulster Folk Park - one of the best open-air museums in Europe - 1hr 20 mins.
  • Derry ('Londonderry') - fascinating UK City of Culture 2013 -  1 hr. 20 mins.
  • Giant's Causeway - 2 hr 10 mins - or also see Derry on the way

We had a wonderful stay at Luna and really didn't want to leave. It was the perfect getaway! Feels remote but not too far from great restaurants and bars and of course surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Luna and Kuba had everything we needed to make for a cosy stay. Amazing accommodation! Clean and perfect in every way. Especially loved the aesthetic and decor. We were there on a day where the sky was clear and the color landscape would change by the minute as the clouds shifted. Truly a magical site. The housekeeper and owners are very friendly. I’d come back in a heartbeat! - Lisa

I booked this trip for my parents as it was mums birthday. They said they couldn’t fault it. They had a brilliant time. Luna was extremely clean. They loved the shepherds hut and the fire. Greg and Lukas where kind enough to leave my parents fresh eggs, cider, crisps and more! The beach was beautiful and so clean. The local pub was very nice and they loved the food there. Beautiful scenery and friendly locals!

October 2019

The most magical getaway when you need to unplug and unwind. This iddillic location is picturesque, quiet and so relaxing. The accommodation itself is cosy, stylish and clean. The wood burning fire is the perfect addition, especially on colder nights. We took a mid morning stroll along Dooey beach and it was completely deserted and so peaceful. Definitely recommend a drive to Dungloe for a lovely Sunday roast at the Bayview restaurant. We would definitely go for longer than 2 nights next time! Greg and Lukas are very friendly, communicative hosts with helpful recommendations for the area. A wonderful experience. - Edward

We had a fabulous time and really enjoyed using the outside space too, including the fire pit and kuba hut was lovely too with the wood burner stove and hammock. Location was superb for beaches and attractions. Very close to Dooey Beach which was beautiful. It is a small space but if it’s just the two of you it’s more than enough. We would recommend. - Rachel

This is an amazing home in a stunning location. The home itself was really clean and well thought out with space being used really well. It really exceeded our already high expectations. We happily spent most of our time relaxing on the deck or in Kuba taking in the amazing views. Plenty of nearby beaches, pubs and restaurants to visit also. We would highly reccomend and will definitely be back soon! - Allen

September 2019

I booked this place as part of a suprise for my wife and it made her so happy that I couldn't recommend it more. The place is amazing under any weather as we got both amazing sun and a very rainy day but who doesn't love to sit by the fire and hear the wind and look at rain falling? Very romantic environment and infant friendly too. The baby could play almost freely on the bed as there was only one side he could fall from so it was easy to protect it. Lucas & Greg are just probably the best hosts we had. Rest assured that they will take care of you. The place was spotlessly clean. - Andre

September 2019

We had a lovely 2 days at Greg and Lukas’s place. It was so still and peaceful when we were there and we were able to sit out late into the evening. No TV ,no radio, no noise, bliss. Very good internet service and could have used that for music etc but didn’t want to break the silence. Enjoyed the fire and the selection of books and magazines provided. Had lovely chat with Anna when we were leaving. Really recommend Luna and Kuba if you want to chill out for a couple of days and do no more than watch the bulrushes sway gently in the wind. - Anne & Sam

Lovely location with great scenery and beaches nearby. Quiet and peaceful with very little noise etc. Clean and tidy with most things you can think of already available. Luna is quite small but things are thought out well to maximise the space. We both enjoyed the weekend away with our dogs and we’re all pretty tired now after some great walks nearby. - Trevor

Luna is a spectacular and unique place to relax, it's a hidden gem! (but easy to find with the help of googlemaps!) We wanted a weekend to chill out but also to get out and explore during the day. There was plenty of places nearby for us to visit. We stayed for two days and we experienced every season! but even if it's raining (and be prepared for this!) it doesn't take away from the breath-taking surroundings of the Wild Atlantic Way. We explored a number of beaches (when the sun was shining) right on our door step, as well as visiting the cliffs of Sliabh Liag 45 mins drive . But for us Luna and Kuba was the best bit of our stay. We wanted to relax and we couldn't have picked a better place to relax in. We sat in Kuba our first night, fire on, looking out onto the beautiful country side and watched the sun go down with glass of wine. Heaven. The bed is great size and comfy, kitchen is well equipped, and the shower has plenty of hot water (perfect to come back to after a day of exploring the Wild Atlantic Way) - a great host and left all the information we needed for our stay. Wish we could have stayed a full week, we will definitely be back! - Jamie
