about the property

Bespoke lakeside shepherd's hut on the shore with cool outdoor 'cube' for fireside evenings overlooking the bay, on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way!

Note - Bookings in Nov 20 (as everywhere in all of Ireland) only for non-touristic purposes.

BOOK with CONFIDENCE - if there's a 'lockdown' (with you, or us) we'll allow you to MOVE DATES to any in 2020/21. Different seasons may be different prices.

We're lucky enough to own a wonderful piece of land on Traighenna Bay, a sheltered stretch of water on Ireland's famous 'Wild Atlantic Way'. We've designed and built 'Lakeside Luna' to sit on the edge of a beautiful pool, and also 'Kuba' alongside where guests can enjoy their evenings undercover with a wood-burning stove. It's an entirely self-contained private unit that is comfortable all year round.

Luna has been carefully designed to contain all the essentials - a quality (full-size) double bed, fridge, cooker etc, and a small shower and toilet room inside. Outside you've decking and Kuba, an 'outdoor cube' we designed so you could enjoy the views fireside in any weather.

A 5-minute drive will take you to Dooey beach (one of the finest in Ireland) or there are smaller, sandy beaches on the way. You can walk to the shore from Luna, but it's best to nip into the car for the really nice sandy beaches. Locally you'll find an amazing coastline, small-towns, good food, Glenveigh National Park and plenty to fill weeks of day trips.

travel info

You can easily fly by low-cost carrier but we prefer the greener (and nicer) route by ferry with your own car. Ireland is such an amazing country, and you'll find so much to do and see 'en route'.

Note Aer Lingus often have deals as cheap as Ryanair/ Easyjet and fly to 15 UK airports

Fly to:

  • Donegal - flights to Dublin and Glasgow with Flybe (25-minute fabulous coastal drive to the cottage)
  • Derry (Londonderry) via Glasgow, Liverpool (with Ryanair) and London City (BMI) 1hr. 25 mins. away) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast International via these departure airports & Easyjet & Ryanair (2 hr. 25 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast City via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 35 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Knock via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 15 min.)
  • Dublin via these departure airports & Ryanair (3 hr. 25 min.)

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away)
  • Larne via Fleetwood (2 hr. 40 mins.)
  • Dublin via Holyhead/ Douglas (3 hr. 30 min.)
  • Dun Laoghaire via Holyhead (3 hr. 35 mins.)
  • Rosslare via Fishguard/ Pembroke Dock (5 hr. 15 mins and an amazing drive)
(Tip - ferries cheapest Mon > Thu)

local area

You're right on one of the most beautiful shorelines in the world. Most people spend their days discovering the many beaches (there are hundreds), the great local food and welcome in the pubs and walking across 'wilderness' landscapes.

  • Dooey Beach - 5km of sandy beach (also walking distance) - known for surfing  (5-minute drive).
  • Lettermacaward - 2km or under a 5-minute drive - your village with 2 shops, petrol, hairdresser, 3x pubs (trad. music every Friday).
  • Dungloe town - a 12-minute drive - 'Capital of the Rosses' with supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, Supervalu, The Cope), pubs (10)
  • Portnoo/ Narin - amazing beach and walk to the island at low tide (15 mins. drive).
  • Maghery Beach - horse-riding on the beach - 20 mins. drive
  • Sliabh Liag - Europe's highest sea cliffs (amazing) - 45 mins. drive
  • Horse Riding at Dunlewey - 40 mins. - also, kids play park and mini zoo there.
  • Glenveagh National Park / National Park  - 45 mins
  • Belfast city - 2hr 35 mins.
  • Ardara 'Heritage Town' (cafes, pubs, tweed/weaving) - 20 mins.
  • Donegal County & Events Guide
  • Local angling, boat trips & local walking (video)
  • Glencolmcille Folk Village & beach & pubs - 55 mins.
  • Ulster Folk Park - one of the best open-air museums in Europe - 1hr 20 mins.
  • Derry ('Londonderry') - fascinating UK City of Culture 2013 -  1 hr. 20 mins.
  • Giant's Causeway - 2 hr 10 mins - or also see Derry on the way

Greg and Lukas' place is absolutely amazing. The scenery is breathtaking and Luna (the main house) and Kuba (the living room) are wonderfully designed, well thought out, nicely decorated, and a pleasure to spend time in, whatever the weather. Get yourself a bunch of firewood and head up there for some serious relaxation. Thank you for the wonderful stay! - Anna

Staying in Luna and Kuba was a wonderful experience. It is the perfect base from which to explore one of the most beautiful parts of Irelands. Spend the days on the wind swept beaches and snuggle in the evening in Kuba with a good book. This is a stay that should be tried! - Gabi

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at this little hideaway and such a welcome treat after so many cancelled plans in 2020! The space was cleverly designed and welcoming - and the weather holding out meant we got to enjoy it even more. It is perfectly located to explore Donegal and just what you need to relax in after long days out. Will definitely be recommending to friends! - Lauren
