Maenllwyd is a Grade II listed former tavern on a quiet road not far outside the Carmarthenshire village of Meidrim in West Wales. It's a great choice for a family break in the Carmarthenshire hills, and particularly good if you've got a dog, as there's an enclosed 3-acre field for them to exercise in. There's also a full-size pickleball court on site—great fun for families to enjoy together. The chief delight here is the beautifully restored interior, impeccably handled by local owners Jo and Steve. Steve has been a consultant for and worked on dozens of Landmark Trust and National Trust restorations in Wales, but the revival of this pub (back into a house) has been a labour of love. You're only 10 minutes from St Clears town, or 25 minutes to Pendine sands, 30 to Llansteffan. As St Clears is on the main arterial route into Pembrokeshire you can easily choose between days out in Tenby, Saundersfoot, Pembroke etc. or stay in Carmarthenshire for the Botanic Gardens, Laugharne, Aberglasney house and gardens, or a choice of beaches.

What a gorgeous place Maenllwyd is. We slept in four comfortable rooms with big beds and a real sense of peace and tranquility. We spread out and relaxed and yet we felt cosy. We chose to hang out in the kitchen and living room. The kitchen was well equipped (I like cooking) and stores in Carmarthen and St Clears provided tasty local produce. Lots of options available for eating out and takeaway in both towns. I often look at books in cottages and bnbs and imagine reading them while I’m there, but almost always end up sticking with the books I brought. Here I found myself immersed in the books on the shelves. They guided our choice of walks and kept me entertained. Our three dogs had their best stay yet. The garden is sizeable and the field over the road is large and secure. Plenty of dog friendly beaches are not too far away and none too crowded. Oh and the kids love pickle ball it turns out. Highly recommend!

Fantastic place, it felt like we had stumbled into an old farmhouse from the St. Fagan's museum. Full of character and oldy worldly charm but very well equipped. Loved the pickle ball court, a nice addition.

We had a delightful two-night stay in rainy July. 3 adults plus a Labrador. Cold enough for a fire, and a welcome and generous amount of wood. A splendid, roomy and imaginatively restored pub. Would definitely return. Good for the dog and owners with secure spaces outside.

A beautiful, comfortable and well equipped cottage perfect for a family stay. Stunning beaches a short drive away and the pickleball court and play area to enjoy in the lovely garden. The owners kindly arranged bed guards for our four year olds, which was much appreciated. We were only sorry the weather was too warm to light the cosy looking open fires.
