about the property

Traditional Donegal cottage by the shore with access to private sandy beach. Sleeps 4, dogs welcome.

"We walked outside to a scene that electrified the senses: the distinctive smell of seaweed drying in the inlet below; a wondrous vista out to a long bay that looked like it was lit from within. The only sound was a distant tractor on the single-track lane.

It’s for elemental experiences like these that people venture to this part of Ireland."The Guardian reviewing Teach Mhici

"If you were asked to describe the most idyllic seaside holiday home you could imagine, you might come up with something close to Teach Mhicí. Glittering turquoise water, private beach with pristine white sand, Scandi-inspired cottage with turf-woodburner and sea views from every window; it’s a little slice of Irish paradise."The Irish Times

  • Irish Times - No 2 in their 2019 List of 'Amazing Places to Stay in Ireland' (our CroPod was No.1)

A traditional Irish vernacular cottage sitting on the shore of the Atlantic with access to our private, sandy beach.

Teach Mhicí (Irish for Mickey's Cottage) is the result of a substantial renovation and restoration project by Under the Thatch. Location is everything to us, and this really is one of the best. Spend your days fishing or crabbing, or reading in your private cove, then home to the turf fire and fall asleep listening to the sound of the waves.

There's one (Kingsize) bedroom and a small (double) loft over the main living space. We've added a large comfortable bathroom, and insulated everywhere before we lined it in wood from the local forest. It's a simple, but wonderful place. Come and enjoy one of the most remarkable and unspoilt coastlines in Europe...and start with your own. If you require more space we also own An Teach Tra behind.

travel info

You can easily fly by low-cost carrier but we prefer the greener (and nicer) route by ferry with your own car. Ireland is such an amazing country, and you'll find so much to do and see 'en route'.

Note Aer Lingus often have deals as cheap as Ryanair/ Easyjet and fly to 15 UK airports

Flights? Note that Northern Ireland is closer than, say, Dublin.

  • Donegal - flights to Dublin and Glasgow with Flybe (25-minute fabulous coastal drive to the cottage)
  • Derry (Londonderry) via Glasgow, Liverpool (with Ryanair) and London City (BMI) 1hr. 25 mins. away) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast International via these departure airports & Easyjet & Ryanair (2 hr. 25 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast City via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 35 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Knock via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 15 min.)
  • Dublin via these departure airports & Ryanair (3 hr. 25 min.)

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away)
  • Larne via Fleetwood (2 hr. 40 mins.)
  • Dublin via Holyhead/ Douglas (3 hr. 30 min.)
  • Dun Laoghaire via Holyhead (3 hr. 35 mins.)
  • Rosslare via Fishguard/ Pembroke Dock (5 hr. 15 mins and an amazing drive)
    (Tip - ferries cheapest Mon>Thu)

Staying at Greg and Lukas Cottage was a great chance to relax and leave your everyday life behind you. The cottage is very lovely and just as described. The privat Beach right infront of the door is just amazing (you wake up in the morning to the sound of the waves!) and is great place to relax. It is a great place to discover Donegal and Greg and Lukas give you good tips on where to go and what to do. If you want the full irish cottage experience. Come! - Marlene

Perfect place to enjoy the wild Ireland. The beaches and landscapes around and in front of the house are breathtaking. The house is very beautiful and great for small kids. Was amazing to have a babybed, chair and even a basket with beach toys. Thank you! - Lidia

October 2019

A part of Donegal we were not familiar with, we had the most relaxing week here and the cottage was perfect. Stylish, comfortable (best bed ever), great open plan layout for living / kitchen, fantastic shower, and that view from nearly every window - loved how the light was different every time you looked out. So little passing traffic - all you can hear is the sea, the birds, bees buzzing, the sound of rain on the roof is wonderful. The huge Dooey Strand is only a 15 minute walk and we walked the beach every day, and even in the middle of July sometimes we were the only people on the beach. Dungloe is best for food shopping - LIDL, Aldi and best of all SuperValu (great fresh meat / fish counters). Portnoo Strand is a lovely walk too, and Ardara is a great wee town for a visit. But really we didn’t venture any further than that, and the cottage was so cosy with the stove lit that we cooked and ate there every night. It really is so peaceful, you cannot help but feel restored in body and soul after spending time here. We absolutely loved it. - Jane

A great place , enjoy what you can on foot without chasing all over the county . The information folder has some great tips . Enjoy the peace and tranquility, listen to the waves and the seals . Ardara was fun as was Malin head , Kilcar and surrounding Atlantic Way was stunning . But don’t forget what’s on your door step. The hosts were very attentive and responsive to the one issue we had and resolved immediately. Thank you - Anne-Mariel

We had a wonderful stay at Mickey´s Cottage. The house is clean, very cosy and has everything you need. We liked the look out of the windows and the surrounding is "wow", as well as the beaches. There are a lot of beautiful places nearby to visit. We hope we will be able to come back once. Thank you very much!

Greg and Lukas' cottage is in a stunning location with lots of beaches, walks and cycles on its doorstep. The house is very comfortable and is really well set up with everything you could need. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was great. The house was really nicely decorated and laid out. There were fresh duck eggs left for us on arrival which were much appreciated. Lukas also dropped in a bucket and spade for our daughter which was very thoughtful. We had a really relaxing few days in the cottage and only wish we were there for longer. We'd definitely like to stay again and would highly reccomend it. - Eloise

The location of the cottage is just amazing. Make sure to check out all the beaches just out of the front door. The cottage itself is super cosy and a perfect hideout for some days to relax. Everything was really clean and the kitchen is well equipped. We really enjoyed the days there exploring the surroundings. P.S.: We loved the shower - Maximillian

July 2019

This was our favorite accommodationduring our stay in Ireland. It was perfect on every level. We just wish we could have stayed longer. That was our only regret. The cottage is in a beautiful, secluded location, surrounded by gorgeous unspoiled beaches. The cottage itself is spacious and very nicely decorated, and was spotlessly clean. We loved our time here and would stay in this charming cottage again in a heartbeat. - Anne-Marie

What a marvellous cottage! We all loved it. We had some wild, wet weather and some glorious sunshine. We walked, swam (well, 2 of us did!) ate well, enjoyed the fire, laughed a lot, saw a couple of seals and explored the local area. Marvellous!

We had such a blissful week at the cottage! We had almost everything we needed--a hairdryer would have been nice to have, but I made it through the week without one. The pictures were just as promised, but there's sadly no way you can truly capture both the beauty and serenity of the place. Thanks for a wonderful stay, and we enjoyed talking to Greg about his projects!

Breathtaking views from a traditional cottage with a cool, contemporary finish. Fantastic spot to take a young family, we forgot our busy lives and lived in the moment, watching the tides turning in a blissful, gently changing landscape. A sea view from every window. Rock pools, picnics, paddling and sandcastles on the private beach, our three year old cried when we had to leave.

Fantastic cottage, brilliant, location on the beach, stunning Donegal scenery, and knockout wildlife. From the cottage and beach during our stay we have seen seals, a sea otter eating a catch, herons fishing, plovers and a we think a pod of porpoises. Fabulous and varied walks around County Donegal. What an amazing place. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous beach house in a beautiful secluded location. The weather was pretty rubbish but there was still loads to do - sea swimming, beach walking, mountains, waterfalls and castles nearby...back home to a turf fire and to watch the sun set over the water. Plenty to keep grown ups and children entertained. Would definitely recommend.

Miki’s cottage is absolutely gorgeous. It’s cosy and fabulously insulated, so even better to hear and not feel the weather, which has been surprisingly good actually. Great location with beautiful views. Even swam off own beach. What’s not to like

We had a great time at 'Teach Mhici' - Miki's Cottage. Beautiful setting and excellent accommodation. The house was toasty warm all weekend. We loved walks on dooey beach then warming up beside the log fire in the evening. This is our 4th stay inside UTT property and they never disappoint. Thanks for another great stay and looking forward to the next.

What a fabulous cottage! We were fortunate to have serene weather with beautiful blue skies to the surprise of friends who said it rains all the time. Already planning to go back.....

Just returned from a fantastic 4 nights at Teach Mhici. What a little gem of a cottage, everything you need is there and it has been so beautifully done out and to a really high standard. A different view out of every window, and all stunning. We had mixed weather but that only added to the atmosphere and gave us the excuse to use the wood burning stove in the evenings. We will definitely return to Mikis to explore more of this lovely coastline and area. Marion & Glyn

We had a lovely 7 night stay at cottage. On our last day we had a wonderful swim from the nearby beach. The cottage was cosy and well equipped. We mainly cooked in house which was great. Visited Packies Bar and Elliots pub. Both worth a visit. The walk to Dooey beach and the walk along Dooey beach were great. A lovely place to stay and rest up.

Despite my love of Donegal I confess to having had concerns about spending a week in a cottage with no television and the probability of limited or no wifi to act as distractions in the event of poor weather. Now back home after our holiday at Teach Mhici I am delighted to report that my concerns were unfounded. The cottage is exactly as described, comfortable and oozing with irish character. The location was perfect for what we wanted and allowed my husband and I along with our dog to walk from the door to the beach immediately below (at low tide), to walk 3 minutes around the corner to another beach which allowed for reasonable walking opportunities (again at low tide), or to walk 20-30 minutes to the extensive and stunningly beautiful Dooey beach. I found the online booking process to be efficient and straightforward and the ability to contact relevant staff, including the owner, to answer questions following arrival at the property excellent. We had a wonderful week at the cottage despite the challenges of Donegal weather and in fact, as a result of photographs we took and sent to our daughter in Germany, she has now booked a week at Teach Mhici next summer for her and her family. Super cottage, super location and super holiday!

We had a fabulous time at Miki's cottage. The location is spectacular with beautiful sunsets and beaches all within walking distance of the cottage. Easy access to all the sites and a comfortable cottage to return to. Greg was very welcoming and helpful with suggestions of places to visit. Donegal is a magical county to visit. I've come home fully refreshed for busy Autumn

August 2017

This was everything we hoped for and more. The location is stunning, whatever the weather. We enjoyed many walks on our own beach (which was fairly extensive when the tide was out) plus visiting many of the picturesque bays and coastlines of Donegal. The cottage is immaculate and furnished to a very high standard with lots of space. It fuses the traditional with modern home comforts - great shower. There is absolutely nothing to fault. Thanks for sharing this very special Irish cottage.

We thoroughly enjoyed our break in Donegal. From walking on Dooey beach to exploring the surrounding area - we even spotted a seal from the cottage! Nancy's in Ardara completely met our high expectations with a seafood lunch followed by a browse through the great craft shops in town. Elliot's Bar (just 5 mins away) provided a very entertaining evening with traditional music and craic! Valerie & Robert, Rosemary & Gavin (County Down)

We absolutely loved this place!!!!! UTThas done an amazing job restoring this old cottage, it's spotless clean, warm and very comfortable and really nicely decorated. The location is perfect! beautiful quiet area, at night all you can hear is the ocean. The location is great for exploring all the amazing sights that Donegal has to offer and the cottage is only a short stroll from beautiful Dooey Beach. 10/10 for this little cottage! What an amazing stay! Very chilled and relaxing, and such a beautiful cottage. Enjoyed walks here at Dooey beach and over at Portnoo as well as trip up to Dunfanaghy beach. Good pubs all over - all dog-friendly. Didn't want to come home! - Kelly & Paul McFadden (Glasgow/Belfast)

July 2017

The Cottage is really excellent and in such a beautiful place. We were delighted to be the first to stay after UTT's renovations and had the most relaxing and enjoyable weekend here. Cannot emphasise enough how relaxing this place is - if you are looking for a complete getaway it would be hard to beat. Beaches nearby (Dooey in particular) are up there with the best you'll find. Couple of good pubs nearby and a 20 min drive takes you to some really nice wee towns (Ardara amongst them). The cottage itself has been done to a really high standard and has everything you need. Owner was a very friendly and helpful host, when he came down to say hello. We will be back! P.
