"We walked outside to a scene that electrified the senses: the distinctive smell of seaweed drying in the inlet below; a wondrous vista out to a long bay that looked like it was lit from within. The only sound was a distant tractor on the single-track lane.

It’s for elemental experiences like these that people venture to this part of Ireland."The Guardian reviewing Teach Mhici

"If you were asked to describe the most idyllic seaside holiday home you could imagine, you might come up with something close to Teach Mhicí. Glittering turquoise water, private beach with pristine white sand, Scandi-inspired cottage with turf-woodburner and sea views from every window; it’s a little slice of Irish paradise."The Irish Times

  • Irish Times - No 2 in their 2019 List of 'Amazing Places to Stay in Ireland' (our CroPod was No.1)

A traditional Irish vernacular cottage sitting on the shore of the Atlantic with access to our private, sandy beach.

Teach Mhicí (Irish for Mickey's Cottage) is the result of a substantial renovation and restoration project by Under the Thatch. Location is everything to us, and this really is one of the best. Spend your days fishing or crabbing, or reading in your private cove, then home to the turf fire and fall asleep listening to the sound of the waves.

There's one (Kingsize) bedroom and a small (double) loft over the main living space. We've added a large comfortable bathroom, and insulated everywhere before we lined it in wood from the local forest. It's a simple, but wonderful place. Come and enjoy one of the most remarkable and unspoilt coastlines in Europe...and start with your own. If you require more space we also own An Teach Tra behind. NEW FOR 2020 - Smart TV with Netflix added, and DVDs+ player, to keep you entertained in any weather!

travel info

You can easily fly by low-cost carrier but we prefer the greener (and nicer) route by ferry with your own car. Ireland is such an amazing country, and you'll find so much to do and see 'en route'.

Note Aer Lingus often have deals as cheap as Ryanair/ Easyjet and fly to 15 UK airports

Flights? Note that Northern Ireland is closer than, say, Dublin.

  • Donegal - flights to Dublin and Glasgow with Flybe (25-minute fabulous coastal drive to the cottage)
  • Derry (Londonderry) via Glasgow, Liverpool (with Ryanair) and London City (BMI) 1hr. 25 mins. away) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast International via these departure airports & Easyjet & Ryanair (2 hr. 25 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast City via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 35 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Knock via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 15 min.)
  • Dublin via these departure airports & Ryanair (3 hr. 25 min.)

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away)
  • Larne via Fleetwood (2 hr. 40 mins.)
  • Dublin via Holyhead/ Douglas (3 hr. 30 min.)
  • Dun Laoghaire via Holyhead (3 hr. 35 mins.)
  • Rosslare via Fishguard/ Pembroke Dock (5 hr. 15 mins and an amazing drive)
    (Tip - ferries cheapest Mon>Thu)

customer reviews for 'Teach Mhicí' - Mickey's Cottage

Our stay at Teach Mhicí was most enjoyable. To get away from the every day pace of life and stay for a few days in such a remote and beautiful place was incredible. The cottage itself was beautiful with an old world feel yet with all the mod cons, not to mention your own private beach. We will definitely book another one of Under The Thatch houses but we might try another one of there incredible locations.

Lovely cosy cottage. We felt like we were at the edge of the world because it was that peaceful. Shower and Woodburner brilliant.

- Matthew F,

Absolutely loved our cottage stay. It was very easy to check in and the place was spotless! The private beach and beach a short walk away were real highlights for us and our puppy. It is the perfect location to completely get away from it all and relax while being a close enough drive to lots of beautiful spots in Donegal. The log burner makes evenings very cosy no matter what the weather. - Emma

Romantic setting for anyone who needs to get away. Sitting by the log fire with a glass of wine and periodically getting up to look out the window was magic. I would recommend this cottage to friends and would visit again - Vincent

Lovely stay in what is a stunning part of Donegal. The home is full of charm and well protected from the Atlantic weather. The view that greets you when walking out the front door is worth the stay alone. - Derek

Beautiful old Irish cottage that has been modernised so warm and cosy while remaining authentic. The most amazing views and walks from the front door. I saw three seals on the beach a few mornings. Quiet area with lots of local walks and beaches and easily accessible day trips along the coast. A real escape back to nature. - Kate

July 2020

The cottage is immaculately kept, the shower is amazing. The private beach and 7acres of land are all beautiful, I highly recommend going there and experiencing it yourself. This place is truly unbelievable, pictures don't do it justice. The private beach is beautiful and opens up massively when the tide is out. I highly reccomend getting down there to watch the Donegal sunset. I brought my dog for the walks which are all beautiful and right at your front door. I look forward to returning. - Kane

May 2020

We loved our stay in Greg and Lukas’ cottage. The cottage is cozy and right by the water. We watched so many beautiful sunsets. A lot of attention to detail had been set up with a lot of attention to detail: it’s was stylish, clean and even had fresh flowers. Lukas and Greg were such attentive hosts, always there for us to ask questions or help us with recommendations. We would definitely come back! - Eva
