Blaentrothy Bach
Grosmont, Y Mynyddoedd Ddu
Cysgu 2
Cwn yn iawn yma

Named in the 'Top 10 UK cottages for Lovers' (Sunday Telegraph 30 03 08). Below is an unabridged version of what their reviewer Kate Smallwood said:

'Converted from the stables of a 17th-century farm, Blaentrothy Bach lies adjacent to a farmhouse with great views towards the Skirrid and Sugar Loaf mountains. Inside, you'd be forgiven for spending your entire stay ensconced in the beamed bedroom, which is also home to a stylish roll-top bath. Perfect for explorers and literature lovers - this is the place to discover the Welsh Marches.'

VisitWales Graded 4* for 2008!

Wales is full of badly-converted farm buildings... but this one stands out as being different. Blaentrothy Bach breaks the mould in terms of conservation, quality and style - it is a great little place for two.

Blaentrothy Bach is a smart little retreat formed from the former stables on this listed 17th century farm steading in the Black Mountains. It is still a working sheep farm, and the handsome big barn across the courtyard is still used for storing hay and for sheltering lambs during the lambing season.

The cottage has been renovated using traditional materials, sourced locally.
It provides luxury for two in a beautiful open landscape with great views.

It has an open-plan ground floor with lounge (TV/DVD) and kitchen (dishwasher, microwave etc), and toilet cloakroom.

Upstairs there is a large luxury bedroom with a roll-top bath and contemporary handbasin. The whole place is comfortable and stylish. Centrally heated and with (electric) stove-type heater in lounge.

The cottage lies next to the farmhouse in very pretty gentle countryside with lovely views towards the Skirrid and Sugar Loaf Mountain in the Black Mountains. It is an excellent area for exploring the Welsh Marches and Border Country with at least 3 castles within a few miles of the farm. Hereford, Hay-on-Wye and Ledbury are within easy reach, as is Cardiff. The farmland lies in an SSSI (Special Site of Scientific Interest) with an abundance of wild flower meadows.

For walkers, Offa's Dyke is nearby, and there is a well-marked network of good footpaths directly from the farm. You can even walk through the fields to a nearby pub. Shopping is excellent in the area, as are restaurants and pubs. Grosmont village is 2 miles.

Blaentrothy Bach is approached by a quarter of a mile track, which may be a bit difficult in severe winter weather conditions. (The owners have a Landrover to cover these eventualities.) Just a field away is the Romany Caravan Black Mountains.

So What is there to Do?

To see the location click here - complete rurality and peace & quiet yet so easily accessible - nearer to England than many of our properties.

London - 3 hour drive
Bristol - 1 hour drive
Birmingham - 1.5 hour drive

(and these are REAL drive times!).

Abergavenny train station is 7 miles away and Caroline (who lives in the farmhouse) can usually help with pick-ups from the station if you arrive by train.

This area is full of unspoilt small market towns, rolling hills, or the Brecon Beacons National Park with its spectacular landscapes is just a short drive.

There are good public footpaths directly from the farm and you are in the right area to follow the famous Offa's Dyke Path along the border with England. You can walk through the fields to the local pub, or Grosmont village is 2 miles.

See the charming local town of Abergavenny here.

Or head the other way for the famous book town of Hay on Wye. See it here.

There are charming local churches to visit at Partrishow and Cwmyoy whose tower leans at a more rakish angle than even the tower at Pisa!

Or there is choice of fascinating castles to explore locally such as White Castle, Skenfrith or Grosmont.

Or only 35 mins (22 miles) to Hereford with its amazing cathedral & the Mappa Mundi.

Explore the local Brecon Beacons landscape here.

Or the beautiful Wye Valley is also very near - see it here.

Monmouthshire, the county, is one of the loveliest in Wales - find out more here.

Or one of the best pubs in Wales is also nearby, and it too is famous for great food. See it here.

But probably the best thing to do is just relax and enjoy the views of rolling hills, the peace & quiet, and put your feet up with a newspaper and glass of wine!
