Pont Esgob
Y Mynyddoedd Ddu, Parc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheinog
Cysgu 2 + 2 o blant + cot. Croeso i gwn. Wi-Fi Broadband am ddim

Situated on a sunny, sheltered little plateau right in the Black Mountains on the Eastern side of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Pont Escob enjoys one of the loveliest locations imaginable. It has a genuinely ancient feeling and a strong sense of romance.

Stay here for peace & quiet, open landscape views, and to explore one of the most picturesque parts of Wales. You'll have a view of Pen-y-Fal or Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Perfect for Honeymoons, Pont Esgob (Bishop's Bridge) has a wonderful atmosphere that reflects centuries of tradition. The ideal location to read Bruce Chatwin's classic novel On the Black Hill.

Despite enjoying a sense of being 'miles from anywhere' it is actually our easiest cottage to access from England (1 hour from Bristol or Cardiff, 2 hrs from Birmingham, 3 hrs London), and there is plenty to do locally.

What makes Pont Esgob a great Under the Thatch property is that it is a vernacular gem - with a stone tile roof, faded limewashed walls, and a remarkably well preserved C17 oak screen.

The restoration (completed April 2008) has been meticulous, using only the correct traditional materials (lime, horsehair, distemper etc) and excellent quality antique and modern furnishings. It has all the qualities of a Landmark Trust property, without their trademark overpricing.

Pont Esgob is also a sustainably managed cottage. It is remarkably well insulated using sheepswool, no nasty cement products have been used in the renovation, and the natural paints and waxes create a traditional, and healthy interior.

Heating is via sustainably managed logs in woodburners - hence practically carbon neutral!

Installation of central heating would have meant compromising the historic fabric of this Listed cottage, hence it is fuelled by two locally made modern, efficient and effective woodburning stoves.

The compact size of the cottage, high level of insulation in the roof, and back-up electric heating means that the cottage is cosy year-round. We usually light the woodburners ready for your arrival (assuming standard arrival time).

There is free Wi-Fi Broadband access (bring own laptop) and use of phone for important calls (honesty box) as there is no mobile reception.

THE PROPERTY COMPRISES:

Pont Esgob is a detached cottage located by an old stone bridge over the Grwyne river on a very quiet country lane.

The property has pretty gardens with access to the river (take care with toddlers).

The property heated by two modern and efficient woodburning stoves, and supplemented by electric heaters.

NEUADD: The main room is little changed since it was built in the early 1600s. There is a large fireplace (with wood-burner), and around this curls the original stone staircase.

The original flagged floor survives, as does the wonderful oak screen and door through to the modern day kitchen. Large dining table and windows with views front and back.

KITCHEN: There is a modern and practical kitchen in what would once have been the private solar behind the oak screen. Dresser with antique & modern white porcelain dinnerware. Solid wood worksurfaces and a five burner gas hob. Fridge-freezer and the usual stock of cutlery, pots, pans etc. No microwave.

There is a washing machine in the turf-roofed garden shed, which is also where the hot water boiler has been sited to keep it out of the historic core of the building.

SITTING ROOM: Move from the seventeenth century to the Victorian period in this bright and pleasant room with French doors off into the garden, and views over the river.

A lovely 'Bloomsbury' feel and some great antique and modern furnishings. Efficient wood-burner, wi-fi Broadband (free, bring own laptop),Television with basic Sky channels, and DVD. CD player & radio.

The French doors open onto a pleasant stone terrace.

DOUBLE BEDROOM : Large double bedroom with its original oak floor and lovely views over the hills. Plenty of space, and door off to rear corridor.

Note that the only way to access the bathroom and childrens room is through the main bedroom.

BUNK BEDROOM : A small bunk room is fine for kids. Note that the beds are 176cm long rather than the usual 200cm. Views over the river.

BATHROOM: Bright pretty bathroom with bath and power shower over, loo, wash hand basin and electric heated towel rail.

OUTSIDE:

Stone patio area & lawns.

There is a low stone wall between the garden and the riverbank - note potential danger for adventurous toddlers.

The picturesque turf-roofed cedar shed in the garden houses the washing-machine and dryer, hoover and ironing board, garden chairs, hot-water boiler and extra logs.

Parking for one car, or two at a squeeze.

Like all Under the Thatch properties, Pont Esgob is entirely non-smoking inside.

So What is There to Do?

To see the location click here - complete rurality and peace & quiet yet so easily accessible - nearer to England than many of our properties.

Bristol / Cardiff - 1 hour drive Birmingham - 2 hour drive London - 3 hour drive.

The nearest pub is just 2.5 miles and does really great food - some of the best in the National Park - and is very welcoming. This is a bit of a 'gourmet' area and that there are lots of fab places to eat and drink (full information kept at the cottage).

Abergavenny train station is 4 miles away (8 minutes) from where you can get a taxi or we can sometimes provide a pickup if you arrive by train.

This area is full of unspoilt small market towns and rolling hills. You're located on the East of the Brecon Beacons National Park with its many spectacular landscapes.

There are good public footpaths throughout the Beacons, Black Mountains, or follow the famous Offa's Dyke Path along the border with England.

There are charming local churches to visit at Partrishow and Cwmyoy whose tower leans at a more rakish angle than even the tower at Pisa!

Or there is choice of fascinating castles to explore locally such as White Castle, Skenfrith or Grosmont.

See the charming local town of Abergavenny here.

Or head the other way for the famous book town of Hay on Wye. See it here.

Or only 35 mins (22 miles) to Hereford with its amazing cathedral & the Mappa Mundi.

Explore the local Brecon Beacons landscape here.

Or the beautiful Wye Valley is also very near - see it here.

Monmouthshire, the adjoining county, is one of the loveliest in Wales - find out more here.

Close to Pont Escob (as you drive from Llanvihangel Crucorney) is a fascinating SSSI. Access is possible via raised walkways through this rare example of wet woodland, with alders and other indigenous trees historically coppiced for charcoal (hence the origin of the name for the local hamlet of Forest (char) Coalpit. The SSSI is rich in fauna and flora, including King Cups, mosses, and is an important habitat for the dormouse.

But probably the best thing to do is just relax and enjoy the views of rolling hills, the peace & quiet, and put your feet up with a newspaper and glass of wine!

Please Note - if toddlers escaped from the garden the river is close by and a potential danger.

The stone stairs up to the main bedroom are a potential danger, but there is a door to prevent toddlers climbing up.

Like all Under the Thatch accommodation, this property is entirely non-smoking inside.
