Read an independent review of Wendy from the travel section of the Guardian newspaper here.

Enjoy some of the finest views in Wales from The Aberporth Express - our converted Edwardian railway carriage located on the coastal footpath between the sandy beaches at Aberporth and Tresaith. Both beaches are awarded Blue Flag status for their clean sand and clear water, and bottle-nose dolphins, seals and porpoises are regularly seen from the carriage. Yes, it really is a restored Edwardian railway carriage on the coastal footpath!

Our 'amazing' railway carriage was built around 1905 as a sleeper coach that travelled on the Great Western Railway. This particular coach was called 'Wendy' after the character in Peter Pan (published the year before). We kept the name as we think there is definately something magical about our favourite holiday home! After travelling the length and breadth of the Great Western line between England and Wales, Wendy retired from service in 1937.

We've restored her to 1930s condition inside at (gulp) huge cost - this was our was most difficult restoration task ever - but she is worth it!

The last stop for Wendy was the Ceredigion Heritage Coast footpath near Aberporth, from where she has enjoyed panoramic views of Cardigan Bay and its impressive wildlife for nearly seventy years since. You'd never get permission to build anything in this wild and beautiful spot today, hence we feel like proud owners of this rare 'building'.

We think it is one of the best locations in Wales, and we stay ourselves whenever we get chance!

The Aberporth Express offers one of the best opportunities to see Europe's largest colonies of bottle-nose dolphins, as well as a host of other marine wildlife including porpoises and grey seals. One particularly 'friendly' seal pops up in the water below Wendy most evenings around 6pm!

The direct access from the garden gate onto the heritage coast footpath means this is an ideal location for exploring the West Wales coast. A great holiday for (well-behaved!) dogs!

You can get down to the sea in front of 'Wendy' if you are agile (the rocks are great for diving off) and clean, sandy beaches are just 400 yards walk. You can catch sea bass and mackerel on lines from the rocks in front of the carriage.

There is a village pub, shop and food within a 5 minute walk including a Chinese take-away and a beachside cafe.

The Aberporth Express sleeps 5 in two train compartment bedrooms. Note that is has two standard double beds (proper sprung mattresses) and a narrow single train bunk (suitable for child, not adult). All rooms in the carriage are lined in oak, are insulated and have panel heaters so are suitable for use all year round. We love it when it is stormy in winter!

Every room has uninterrupted country and/or sea views with open fields to the rear, sea to the front. Peaceful location with no roads within 300 yards and no noise or sound pollution! No near neighbours.

The carriage doesn't have Broadband but only a 25 minute (15 mile) drive up the coast to the Harbourmaster where you can enjoy free wireless Broadband over a coffee/ drink or award-winning seafood. You'd probably want to visit the charming harbour at Aberaeron during your stay anyway.

Still not convinced? Click here to see the local coast as captured in an amateur video. It really is magic. Or click here to some genuine holiday photos from one of our guests.

You can arrange a Welsh food hamper to be ready for your arrival through this local company.

Kitchen with cooker, microwave etc

Lounge with traditional enamelled 1920s stove (first basket of fuel supplied). Flat LCD TV on wall. Sofa & armchair. CD stereo. Door to 'platform' decking and garden at rear.

Verandah with wonderful views

Bedroom Compartment 1: Double bed, wardrobe etc, luggage racks!

Bedroom Compartment 2: Double bed + one narrow train bunk (suitable only for child).

Dining Compartment: It wouldn't be a train without one! 1930s Oak dining suite.

Shower Room with quality quadrant shower, toilet etc. Heated chrome towel rail and blast fan for warmth when you get out of the shower.

Garden (enclosed) with access to sea, picnic bench, also private patio to rear (not overlooked).

Please note that because of the exceptional location of the Aberporth Express there can be no vehicular access - the only way to access the carriage is via the (wide, level, gravelled) coastal footpath, 300 yards (3>6mins depending on how fast you walk!) from the (free) car parking. The garden is fully enclosed but note that there are rocky crags and cliffs off the nearby coastal footpath that could be dangerous for small children.

What is there to do locally?

Stay 'home' & watch the marine wildlife

Dine out on local seafood (lobsters are caught directly in front of 'Wendy')

Take a coastal walk to the next village, Tresaith to see the beachside waterfall

Take a boat trip to see dolphins close up

Follow the West Wales Food Trail - Britain's best cheeses, great salmon etc!

Take a day trip into Pembrokeshire (just 25 minute drive)

Enjoy live music, theatre, films & art exhibitions at nearby Theatr Mwldan

Watch the amazing sunsets from your amazing holiday home.

Relax and enjoy the peace, quiet, and landscape views that are beautiful in any weather.

Mwynhewch rai o olygfeydd gorau Cymru o’r ‘Aberporth Express’ – ein coets reilffordd Edwardaidd sydd wedi ei thrawsnewid a’i lleoli ar lwybr treftadaeth yr arfordir ger Aberporth.

Adeiladwyd ein coets reilffordd anhygoel ym 1905 ar gyfer y Great Western Railway a chafodd yr enw Wendy ar ôl y cymeriad yn ‘Peter Pan’ (a gyhoeddwyd y flwyddyn gynt). Cadwyd yr enw oherwydd y credwn fod rhywbeth hudol am ein hoff gartref gwyliau! Ar ôl teithio ar hyd a lled lein y Great Western rhwng Lloegr a Chymru, ymddeolwyd Wendy o’i gwasanaeth ym 1937.

Yr arhosfan olaf i Wendy oedd llwybr Treftadaeth Arfordir Ceredigion. O’r safle yma mae wedi mwynhau golygfeydd panoramig dros Fae Ceredigion a’i fywyd gwyllt a thrawiadol ers bron i saith deg o flynyddoedd bellach. Ni fyddai’n bosib cael caniatâd heddiw i adeiladu unrhyw beth yn y llecyn prydferth anghysbell yma, ac oherwydd hynny rydym yn teimlo’n hynod falch mai ni yw perchnogion yr ‘adeilad’ prin yma.

Mae’r ystafell haul yn y blaen yn cynnig rhai o’r golygfeydd gorau yng Ngorllewin Prydain. Gallwch gerdded ar hyd coridor y goets wreiddiol, hyd yn oed, i fynd i’r ystafelloedd gwahanol.

Mae’r Aberporth Express yn cynnig un o’r cyfleoedd gorau i weld y gytref fwyaf o ddolffiniaid trwynbwl yn Ewrop, ynghyd â llu o fywyd gwyllt arall, gan cynnwys morhychod a morloi llwydion. Mae un o’r morloi mwyaf cyfeillgar yn ymddangos yn y dwr islaw safle Wendy am 6 yr hwyr bron bob dydd!

Mae’r mynediad uniongyrchol o giât yr ardd i lwybr treftadaeth yr arfordir yn golygu bod hwn yn safle delfrydol i archwilio arfordir Gorllewin Cymru. Gallwch fynd i lawr i’r traeth o flaen ‘Wendy’ (mae’r creigiau’n wych ar gyfer deifio) ac mae’r traethau tywodlyd, glân o fewn 400 llathen ar droed. Mae tafarn, siop y pentref a safle cludfwyd o fewn 5 munud ar droed.

Mae’r Aberporth Express yn cysgu 5 (+ crud babi) mewn dwy ystafell wely fawr. Mae golygfeydd godidog o’r wlad neu’r môr o bob ystafell. Caeau i’r cefn a môr i’r blaen. Safle tawel heb ffyrdd o fewn 300 llath na smic na llygredd swn!

Gegin: gyda ffwrn, meicrodon ac ati.

Lolfa: gyda 2 soffa, tân trydan

Ystafell fwyta: gyda golygfeydd arbennig

Ystafell wely 1: Gwely dwbwl a chrud

Ystafell wely 2: Gwely dwbwl a gwely sengl

Ystafell gawod: cawod drydan

Toiled:

Ystafell haul: y tu blaen

Gardd gaeëdig gyda mynediad i’r traeth a’r môr.

Noder, oherwydd leoliad arbennig yr Aberporth Express nid oes modd gyrru cerbyd yno – yr unig ffordd i mewn i’r goets yw ar hyd llwybr (gwastad, grafel) yr hyd yr arfordir, am 300 llath (4 munud) o’r safle parcio (sydd yn rhad ac am ddim).

Rydym yn bwriadu cau ar 25 Medi 2006 ac ailagor ar 20 Hydref ar ôl adnewyddu dodrefn mewnol a gwneud addasiadau:

1. Gosod ymolchdy yn y brif ystafell wely

2. Ychwanegu drysiau Ffrengig yn y cefn

3. Adnewyddu’r arwyddfyrddau GWR gwreiddiol

4. Adnewyddu’r lloriau pren i gyd

5. Gosod tânau llosgi coed (2)

6. Creu patio yn y cefn

7. Gosod dodrefn newydd i gyd

Beth sydd i’w wneud yn lleol?

Aros ‘gartref’ a gwylio bywyd gwyllt y môr.

Bwyta allan ar fwyd môr lleol (gellir dal cimychiaid yn uniongyrchol o flaen Wendy).

Cerdded ar hyd yr arfordir i’r y pentref nesaf, Tresaith, i weld y rhaeadr wrth ymyl y traeth.

Mynd ar daith hwylio i weld y dolffiniaid yn agos

Dilyn Llwybr Bwyd Gorllewin Cymru - am gawsiau a samwn gorau Prydain!

Mynd i Sir Benfro am y diwrnod (dim ond 25 munud mewn car).

Mwynhau cerddoriaeth, y theatr, ffilmiau ac arddangosfeydd crefft yn Theatr Mwldan gyfagos.

Gwylio machlud anhygoel yr haul o’ch cartref gwyliau anhygoel.

Ymlacio a mwynhau’r llonydd, y tawelwch a’r golygfeydd dros y dirwedd sy’n hardd mewn unrhyw dywydd.
