Galera, Granada Province, Andalucia, Spain
A wonderful romantic family holiday cavehouse for holidays in Galera, Andalucia. The only property in Galera with its own private Jacuzzi hot tub and WIFI. Sleeps 6 with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, pets welcome.
We couldn't resist Perez de Hita - a traditional cavehouse with original features, fine mountain views in a conservation village, and c.320 days of sun a year. Walk to the local outdoor swimming pool or restaurants, take a short drive to great natural lake bathing or head out to the sandy beaches of the coast. There isn't much not to like about this part of Spain; fantastic and varied landscapes, friendly people, great regional food at fair prices, and weather that almost always brings a smile to your face. So put the kettle on and watch this mini-video filmed in the village. Perez is great for a romantic holiday for couples, and there's plenty to do locally to keep the kids happy if coming as a family. We've added a great hot tub (seats 5 inc. one lounger).
Perez de Hita is in the heart of the conservation area at Galera, the most celebrated of the Andalucian cave 'towns'. The council here strictly controls development, restricting any new building, and making sure that any changes to existing houses doesn't detract from the character of the neighbourhood. We chose Perez as it retained good original C19 features such as the fireplaces and alabaster kitchen sink, and also because it was one of those houses that feels good from the moment you arrive 'home'. It sits on a very quiet dead-end road high enough up the hill to get the fine mountain views, but still close enough to walk into 'town' (some would say 'village') for lunch, shopping or a dip in the municipal open-air pool.
The beauty of these caves that even in the heat of August they remain deliciously cool inside without any need for fans or air conditioning, and in winter when it snows they remain a constant 13>17 degrees even before you light the fire. Trips out will include freshwater bathing lakes, geothermal pools, many pretty towns, or to the amazing Alhambra in Granada. Kids will enjoy the pool, lakes, go-karting or daytrips to the coast where you'll find an aquapark or scuba diving by the beach. You get 320 days of sunshine a year in this area (compared to around 40 in the UK), and there's a bath on the terrace for you to cool off on the hot ones. Even in August the cave will remain refreshingly cool without any need for air conditioning.
Perez is a simple, relaxing place to stay. It faces south so you migrate to the patio at the front and watch the colours change on the mountain landscape as the day progresses. It started life as two cavehouses, so internally you have the privacy of two 'wings' making it ideal for two couples, each with their own bedroom en-suite. Why not time your holiday to coincide with one of the local fiestas? particularly impressive are the Easter passion plays and parades, and those around 5th January for the 'Three Kings'.
A short break in what turned out to be the coldest of Januarys. A hot shower, some hot food and a roaring fire made for a cosy and special; time in a not to be missed cave house experience. Can't wai...
We can put you in touch with a good, reliable English-speaking taxi guy who lives locally who (if available) will collect you from the airport etc. Arrange direct with Tony. Note you'll probably want at least one car in your party anyway.
Skyscanner is a good place to start looking for flights as there are a huge number of providers in this area, beyond the usual Ryanair etc. Each airport website will have a destination map so you can see who flies to your area. The roads from all airports are good, being almost all dual-carriageway, and rarely busy. Driving is much less stressful here than in the UK!
The local bus service is good, though you may find a hirecar useful. For buses this site is useful (bus to Cullar or Huescar - we may be able to arrange a pick-up if arranged in advance). Or it makes a remarkable drive from the UK. Why not ferry to Santander and then trickle down through Spain?. We've had guests stay with us in Barcelona and then take the amazing roadtrip down through Spain to stay here.
The property is heated by two fireplaces, and additional electric heating in winter - cavehouses maintain a constant temperature year-round. Free WIFI included.
Free wifi is available in the property. You can walk to the local pool (open only in summer) or under 10 minutes drive to the geothermal pool at Fuen Caliente (free - open all year).

We spent only three days in Galera and that was definitely too short! The surroundings are stunning, we had amazing views right from the terrace. The hot tub was the best! Very relaxing after a day of exploring the beautiful area. We did not get to meet the owner person, but they always responded to our emails and text messages immediately. There was a nice bottle of wine and some sunscreen provided, very much appreciated! There was a guest book with lots of helpful tips from previous guests, we recommend to read it through. - Mara
What a wonderful holiday. Fantastic cave house in such a beautiful peaceful location. The views and walks from the house were a daily treat. So many places to visit and things to do in a very friendly and unique part of Spain. The house was very comfy and cool, the perfect place to hide away from the scorching midday sun. We can home relaxed and refreshed.
The cave house has stunning views and with both bedrooms being en suite our holiday was complete. The kitchen is large and light, and the dining area and sitting area very comfortable. Loved the hot tub (though didn't use the outside bath) - didn't want to frighten the neighbours. Love the sun!
Hemos pasado unos dias muy agradobles, unas bonitas visitas y buenos momentos con el hot-tub :) Inma, Cristian, Miguel & Marina
Given that I knew nothing about cave houses, I'm now a convert! The cavehouse has bags of character, the hot tub lets you admire the view in comfort, Galera is a great little town, and the area is lovely. Well worth a visit.
Thank you for a lovely holiday. Very atmospheric and loved the village too. We'll certainly recommend UTT! - Emily, Adrian & Marie -Newbury USA
Very much enjoyed the view on our 13th wedding anniversary getaway. Stumbled upon a massive fiesta in Castril! Driving around the countryside here is very relaxed and fun. - Rob & Cheryl Lifford - Austin, TX, USA
Everything was perfect, as described, owner was really helpful, I recommend him and his cave in Galera - Euti from Belgium
We had a great time in the cavehouse, it was a welcome retreat from the heat of the day! Our children (4 and 5) loved the outside bath and walking down to the town to buy bread each morning and swimming in the local pool. We're just sorry to be missing the fiesta this weekend.
“We had a last minute 3-night stay in the cave house and enjoyed our stay. It was a unique experience and allowed us to visit the best freshwater lake we've ever swum in (Lake Negratin). The cave house is located in a cute little town - close to cafes, restaurants and little grocery store. There were six of us - 4 children - and there was enough room for all of us. We loved the hot tub and also the bath at the front of the house. It's a nice place to relax in the evening sun... with a drink! Very close by is a freshwater spring (in Orce) - also brilliant and highly recommend a visit. The ownerwas very helpful and able to be contacted quickly.” Amy & Brendan, Bungendore, Australia
'Beautiful place and lots to see and do - even out of season. Everybody friendly and laid back, we've recharged our batteries! Loved the hot springs.' Jason & Vickie
'Awesome! Have met lots of great people and their lovely dogs. Picnics at the lake, drives into the mountains, Moorish castles and ruined churches - a fantastic stay and the people so friendly here.' Heather & Nigel
'Gorgeous property- we're very taken by cave life! Weather has been amazing of course, the stars at night great (lots of shooting stars) and we loved the thermal pools. Thanks for a great stay and a lovely venue.' Al & Ann
'What an amazing place! Loved it from the moment we arrived and reluctant to leave! Loved trips to the Alhambra and Castril. Our 19th month old son also thinks the house is amazing, especially the kitchen.' Caroline, Sue & Joseph from Bunbury
