about the property

Fabulous great-value North Wales barn conversion holiday cottage for the family, by far the best holiday cottage near Llandrillo and great for exploring this wonderful country area. A warm Welsh Croeso awaits!

Y Gadlas is a simple, stylish modern barn conversion in a peaceful location with fine views of the Dee Valley. This is one of the most beautiful areas of Wales, and yet one of the easiest regions to access - so ideal for short breaks from England. Stay here to enjoy the un-fussy interior, walk up the Berywn mountains, enjoy the local area, and explore the many pleasures of North Wales. The barn sits on a traditional farm 'clos' (courtyard), with the farmhouse facing away, and with its own private decking area and views. Independent review here and here. Lovely, cosy cottage, well equipped and a perfect base for exploring hidden corners of Wales.

What a wonderful setting. Tucked into the base of the Berwyn Mountains. We walked straight from the door into the mountains. 9 miles on day one and 7 on day two. It was very well equipped with WIFI in all areas and a bigger TV than we have at home. We wanted to stay longer, heard tawny owls at dusk in the trees and gazed at the Wolf Moon. Lovely hosts - cake and wine on arrival what more could you want!

Incredibly peaceful setting, perfect for dog walking straight from the front door. Really spacious cottage yet super cosy with the woodburner lit.

We had an absolutely wonderful week at Y Gadlas. The cottage was so comfortable and cosy and the location so quiet and peaceful. We loved looking out at the hills from the deck and being able to walk from the cottage up into the hills. The hosts were really welcoming and friendly. We would love to go back.

After having our trip to Y Gadlas cancelled twice last year, we were delighted to actually be able to go this time. We were not disappointed - a lovely place to stay in a wonderful setting. The cottage had everything we needed. Thanks to Glenys for the homemade cake, wine and other goodies on arrival - much appreciated. A good base to explore a part of North Wales we had not explored before - wished we had booked for a longer stay.

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Y Gadlas. The cottage was gorgeous and our break was so relaxing. I loved having long baths, my kids (age 7 and 10) took full advantage of the DVDs and the whole family had lovely walks round the local area. One of the highlights was seeing the sunset reflecting on the trees in the nearby woods - stunning! Thank you so much.

We had a very relaxing and comfortable week at Y Gadlas. It is a tranquil place. It is an easy walk down the hill into the village or a steeper climb along the track to the woods behind the cottage. We enjoyed eating out on the deck and being close to nature. A pheasant walked past a few times. Road access was good and you can park right next to the entrance to unload. The owners live close by and were wonderfully helpful when needed. The rest of the time you'd not know they were there. They left some lovely goodies and the place was as clean as a new pin.

We had a lovely time staying at Y Gadlas, from the welcome hamper to the book/DVD library everything was catered for. Thank you so much!

Lovely barn conversion, spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. Felt that all needs had been taken care of, tea coffee wine and cake on arrival and a ‘library’ of books, and DVD’s. Could have stayed for a month. Would definitely go back :-)

We were really comfortable at Y Gadlas, the house is full of lovely touches like throws and cushions and the kitchen has every implement you could possibly need. We also appreciated the lovely xmas tree and decorations around the place! Also the town of Llandrillo has literally the friendliest pub we've ever visited and great trad pub food. The only downside was spending a lot more time in the pub than going on the walks we had planned... but we will do those next time we hope!

We loved staying at Y Gadlas. We really appreciated Glenys’ hospitality; she has thought of everything so we had everything we needed, and there are so many littles touches that mean she has gone above and beyond, especially the treats she left for us. The house is great, really well furnished and very comfortable. We will definitely be staying here again

Y Gadlas is in a beautiful setting of rolling hills and tranquillity. The accommodation was ample for our party with good sized bedrooms and well stocked kitchen. We thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful walks and nights in by the log fire playing games. Glenys was the perfect host, there when needed without being intrusive. The welcome pack was well received by all after a tiring journey. Highly recommend.

We had a fab break at Y Gadlas! We were a party of 4 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs and we still had loads of space in the house. The area is enclosed for dogs but ours were maybe a little too keen on the surrounding sheep to fully trust them off lead in the compound (I'm sure they would have found a break in the fencing/gate/hedge!!). The location was great with walking distance to the village with pub/shop/children's playground and homemade ginger cake was absolutely delicious!!

Excellent accommodation in a lovely little village. The owner was very nice and friendly, and the ginger cake was to die for! Great for visiting the area. So very restful and peaceful, and the scenery was beautiful. Would gladly recomend a stay here.

A comfortable and well-equipped cottage in a really lovely location. The valley is idyllic, with wonderful scenery and excellent walking from the door. A good touring base as well, with a wide variety of landscapes and attractions within sensible driving distance. The cottage owners are extremely welcoming. Would definitely recommend.

The cottage is a wonderful place to stay, with fantastic home made lemon drizzle cake upon our arrival. We stayed for a long weekend but you could easily stay for much longer as the place is so comfortable and spacious. We ate at the village pub where the landlord, staff and locals we very welcoming.

This was a return visit to Y Gadlas for us. The accomodation is of a high spec with proper full size beds. We where made very welcome and there was a lovely welcome pack of Welsh produce. The property has wonderful views and is at the foot of the Berwyns, there’s a number of trails that pass near the property and its just a short walk up the hill to the Berwyn Reserve. Llandrillo is an ideal base situated between Bala and Llangollen and near historic chapels such as Rhug Gwydir Uchaf and Llangar to keep the art historian in us happy. Lovely spending the evening sitting on the deck watching the sun set and the moon rise. Can’t wait to return!

A wonderful cottage, well equipped, comfortable and peaceful. The owners were very friendly and hospitable. They kindly left a delicious cake, some wine and other goodies as a welcome gift. The cottage is well located, it feels remote and quiet but within walking distance to the village with a shop and pub. I look forward to visiting the cottage again soon.

We stayed at Y Gadlas 8-12th March, luckily in between the harsh snowy March weather - in fact we had some sunshine and sunsets, interspersed with the some rain and frosty mornings. It was a joy to look out on the decking and watch the sheep at various times and, although it was a little cold in March to enjoy breakfasting on the decking, we imagine it is lovely in the summer and autumn months. However, we enjoyed star gazing from the decking on a couple of cold clear evenings (wrapped up in scarves and hats though), The house itself has everything you could want in a holiday home: very peaceful, great views, lots of wildlife, great facilities and easy to use log burner. The welcome hamper was much appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed. All in all, we had a very enjoyable and relaxing early Spring getaway.

What an amazing place to stay, with a lovely host Glenys. A beautiful location and perfect to base yourself for day trips around Snowdonia. Very well equipped with literally everything you need. We travelled with a baby and a toddler and Glenys provided a travel cot, high chair and baby gate. Fantastic stuff can’t recommend highly enough, thanks so much.

Another lovely stay in this peaceful location. We seemed to go from winter to summer in one day! From warm and cosy inside in the morning to enjoying predinner drinks on the decking while basking in the sun. A well equipped, clean, comfortable cosy cottage with a very thoughtful welcome pack, the lemon drizzle cake was to die for. A great base for visiting some of our favourite bits of North Wales, Black Rock Sands was just an hour away with Bettws y Coed, Bala and Llangollen much closer. Thank you to Glenys and family for sharing their beautiful surroundings with us.

I have been to many UTT properties, and enjoyed every one of them, but this is the most comfortable and well equipped yet. Spotless, warm, roomy, perfectly equipped, and the little extras that really put the icing on the cak. Did I say cake? Yes, cake, crisps, wine chocs and a beautiful bunch of daffodils! Perfect 10/10 Thank you!

We had such a special stay at Y Gadlas, our first Christmas with our little boy no less and a welcome break from the rat race of our lives. The welcome hamper was so very well considered and an incredibly thoughtful gesture thank you, especially the wine after a long & late drive. The stunning surroundings, doorstep walks, jaw dropping local scenery, friendly local pub and cosy tranquil barn space made it very difficult for us to leave. Y Gadlas has everything you need for a family break, perfectly equipped (and we cooked a full Christmas dinner), handy facilities for little ones and very dog friendly. Thank you again Glenys.

Thank you for a brilliant long weekend. Celebrated my sister's 30th birthday like the family holidays we used to habe when we were kids. Great time at Bala lake and Barmouth beach. Lovely cottage and beautiful surroundings. A great setting for all of our games and played skittles on the massive terrace. Thank you for the arrival treats, homemade lemon cake is my favourite! Cottage very clean and lovely inside and the owner was very helpful. Will be visiting again, can we book the sun again though? Amazing weather! Thank you.

We had a lovely stay. The weather was perfect and there were plenty of walks from the door. The village has 3 lovely places to eat but book early as they were busy even in April! Our two dogs enjoyed sunbathing on the decking and the enclosed area meant they could potter freely in the garden.

April 2017

So many good things about Y Gadlas - friendly welcoming hosts, loads of space/books/games, super comfy beds to rest weary mountain legs, a welcome pack like no other (a sight for sore eyes after a long drive), reliable wi-fi, great location for the millions of activities scattered around the region, lots of dog friendly walking right from the back door, a decked area which was perfect for drinking up the big sky above (I counted four shooting stars!) and a cracking fire to cosy up to. The only negative was having to leave - a longer stay next time for sure! Deb Das

We had a lovely weekend at Y Gadlas - the accommodation was perfect and the location was brilliant! We did some great walks from the door in beautiful hills and even treated ourselves to a meal at Tyddyn Llan. On our arrival, there were all manner of treats waiting for us - what a nice surprise, the seaweed, eggs and local honey were particular favourites! Thanks again, we'll definitely be back.

Great accommodation - lovely and inviting barn and hosts. Welcome pack was much appreciated and there were plenty of books to read in front of the wood fire on a rainy day. The accommodation was spacious and had everything we needed for a lovely stay! Good peaceful country location and base for many of the activities (kayaking, surf Snowdonia, zip wire, bounce below, white water rafting). We loved it!

Super week's stay at Y Gadlas. Warm welcome plus wine, jams and cake when we arrived at this lovely converted barn - and plenty of space for us and our 2 teenagers. Scenery is stunning, we mixed local walks with exploration of North Wales castles (membership of Cadw was great buy) and Bounce Below in the slate caverns, then came back to relax by the wood burner with films and board games and to sleep in comfy beds. Lots of local knowledge for planning what to do, and wildlife to enjoy too. A real pleasure, thanks Glenys and Maurice! Looking forward to seeing you again.

A two night stay in Y Gadlas was simply not long enough. We thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfalls and Harlech Beach but would have really liked another few days just to take in the views, peace and quiet of the converted barn. I also don't think I have slept in a more comfortable bed! We will definitely be back

Where do we start? The location is fantastic, peaceful yet not too far from basic amenities. This is a lovely part of Wales which is often overlooked. Glenys gave us a very warm and generous welcome and we were so surprised by the welcome treats of cake, honey, wine etc.. all very much appreciated. The cottage itself was perfect, spacious, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. We just wish we had time to do the cottage and surroundings justice, but our short 2 -night break was just too short. We will most definitely have to return. Thank you Glenys, we will be back!

We have enjoyed a relaxing break in this well appointed barn conversion. Set in beautiful countryside with the most fabulous views, it really is a wonderful place to switch off and get away from it all. The weather wasn't particularly kind but we managed to walk out and explore the surrounding area. We would whole heartedly recommend Y Gadlas, thank you for a lovely stay.

We had an absolutely brilliant anniversary break in this beautifully appointed converted barn. Our welcome from the owners couldn't have been warmer, a lovely cake, bottle of wine and a big basket of logs for the wood-burning stove. In between rain showers. We even managed to do some sketching and drawing on the decked area with its view of the wild countryside. The peace and quiet were wonderfully relaxing. We are already planning our next UTT adventure.

Hi Glenys, I just wanted to say that we had a great time at the cottage over the weekend. The delicious lemon cake & bottle of Prosecco were a welcome sight on arrival and greatly appreciated. The cottage itself was beautifully presented and had all the home comforts we needed. It was really spacious but really cosy too. We loved honing our log fire skills! The location was great too and we enjoyed some great walks around the Welsh countryside. We'll definitely be coming back in Summer when we can indulge in some sunshine and make more use of the outside decking & bbq! Thanks again Maria & co

Spent Christmas at Y Gadlas on Lechwedd Farm. Lovely bundle of Christmas goodies on arrival and a really pretty Christmas tree. Great space to hang out in, which was just as well given the unceasing rainfall. Excellent hosts who magically appeared but only when needed. Very efficient heating and really easy to use log burner. Short walk into the village to a really friendly pub rounded things off nicely. Atmospherically situated on the side of a hill overlooking the village - fab views across the valley. Thanks to Glenys and Maurice.

A wonderful cottage in a wonderful location. We loved waking up to the views, walking onto the decking and seeing the cows in the fields and watching the stars on an evening too. We were warmly welcomed by the owners and enjoyed all their thoughtful extra touches; especially the lemon drizzle cake. Our 5 year old daughters and our Springer have really loved this holiday. We've walked into the village, collecting leaves on an Autumn walk, walked and played by the lake in Bala and spent a day at the seaside at Barmouth. This is our fourth Under the Thatch holiday and probably one of our most memorable. Thank you

I came to Y Gadlas for a week's break from caring for my very elderly mother and it was wonderful. I felt cared for myself - which was a huge bonus! The house was warm, comfortable and conveniently laid out, with the best equipped kitchen I've ever seen in a holiday let. When I arrived there were some lovely goodies to welcome me - another lovely surprise. Glenys and her family couldn't have been nicer or more helpful, directing me towards local things which might be of interest. The location is stunning - especially with the glorious autumn colours. I'll definitely be coming to stay again - so diolch o galon Glenys am wyliau more cyfforddus a hapus. [Thank you Glenys for such a comfortable and happy holiday break.]

Glenys came out to greet us as we arrived and urged us to knock if we required any further information in addition to the comprehensive details provided. Y Gadlas is a very comfortable, spacious converted barn; main living space, modern bathroom and double bedroom upstairs, downstairs are a further two bedrooms, a bathroom and storage cupboard. All are well-equipped, clean and welcoming. Glenys had kindly provided us with a lovely home-made lemon drizzle cake, a bottle of wine and a pint of milk, so kind and much enjoyed. We visited Llandudno, Surf Snowdonia (fantastic new man-made surfing venue where you can just watch for free if you don't feel brave enough to have a go) and had a lovely family afternoon white-water rafting with Llangollen Outdoors - not as scary as it sounds. Y Gadlas is walkable to the village...we were blessed with good weather so were able to have good sightings of the meteor shower due to atmospheric dark skies. All-in-all both a relaxed and exhilarating few days, made all the better by Y Gadlas and genial hosts. Bet the log fire is great in the winter weather!

Without a doubt, this accommodation surpassed all expectations, and my expectations were high! The location was wonderful, nestled in the hillside with superb views of the surrounding countryside. The cleanliness was second to none, and the extra finishing touches (cake and wine) made us feel really special. The owner was lovely and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. Add to that all of the books, games and details of local walks, we wish we could have stayed longer! Roll on next time :)

A tremendous find. Taken at short notice, we really landed on our feet. A lovely barn conversion at the back of the owner's farmhouse. Very sympathetically converted. The dwelling is so well equipped. There are two bedrooms downstairs and the kitchen and living area are upstairs and warm all the time. The area is in a very rural welsh part of Denbighshire and there are enough walks etc in the vicinity. We can't comment on the local facilities because we didn't use them. We will definitely be returning.

Y Gadlas is beautifully presented and in a fabulous location. The owners were very welcoming and so kind to us and our dogs - we had the most delicious lemon drizzle cake waiting for us when we arrived and a bottle of wine in the fridge! we had a very lovely and comfortable stay at Y Gadlas - it was the middle of winter with snow on the ground but it was super cosy. The cottage is right in the middle of some very beautiful scenery which is full of good walks - we only used the car once to pick up supplies from nearby town of the Bala. We hope to go back!

Great stay. The cottage is absolutely perfect... nice big airy rooms, great views from the large decking area and a large selection of utensils, games and books! We suspect the owners even purchased a new BBQ just for our arrival having asked if the cottage included one!!! Thank you! Lovely friendly family live opposite who welcomed us as we arrived and couldn't do enough for us if we needed it... oh and a lovely homemade cake also met our arrival... delicious! 10mins walk to the pub and 15min walk to a Michelin star restaurant... it doesn't get much better than that. would definitely visit again!
