about the property

Causeway Cottage

We purchased this property on Traighenna Bay to protect a large, unspoiled tract of land that came with it from occasional hunters - we're very fond of a herd of red deer that live in the adjacent forest and come down to the shore to eat the wrack and drink from the river.  The location suggested to us to build a simple wildlife 'hide' with huge windows overlooking wild land where the deer can be seen daily.

Like 'your' deer, you'll be able to roam acres of land from forest to shore, or 5 mins. drive to sandy beaches. The deer are seen most dawns and dusks, and if you're lucky you may also see (or more likely hear) otters on the shore. Sometimes grey seals swim right up to this quiet shoreline, but if you don't see the seals from 'your own' rocks there's a large colony at the end of Dooey beach  (5 mins) who loll about waiting for the salmon and other fish to enter the Gweebarra.

We've completely renovated and upgraded the house for summer 2020. It has three bedrooms, a wonderful, open-plan bright living space and acres of land with direct private shore access.  You're a short drive away from a number of wonderful and quiet sandy beaches, the Glenveagh National Park and just 12 minutes from Dungloe, the small 'capital' of the Rosses. You can walk to the village which has a couple of shops (open 7 days) and a couple of good pubs (one serving food).

You can easily fly by lowcost carrier but we prefer the greener (and nicer) route by ferry with your own car. Ireland is such an amazing country, and you'll find so much to do and see 'en route'.

Note Aer Lingus often have deals as cheap as Ryanair/ Easyjet and fly to 15 UK airports

Fly to:

  • Donegal - flights to Dublin and Glasgow with Flybe (25-minute fabulous coastal drive to the cottage)
  • Derry (Londonderry) via Glasgow, Liverpool (with Ryanair) and London City (BMI) 1hr. 25 mins. away) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast International via these departure airports & Easyjet & Ryanair (2 hr. 25 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast City via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 35 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Knock via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 15 min.)
  • Dublin via these departure airports & Ryanair (3 hr. 25 min.)

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away)
  • Larne via Fleetwood (2 hr. 40 mins.)
  • Dublin via Holyhead/ Douglas (3 hr. 30 min.)
  • Dun Laoghaire via Holyhead (3 hr. 35 mins.)
  • Rosslare via Fishguard/ Pembroke Dock (5 hr. 15 mins and an amazing drive)

  • Dooey Beach - 5km of sandy beach (also walking distance) - known for surfing  (5-minute drive).
  • Lettermacaward - 2km - your village with 2 shops, petrol, hairdresser, pubs (local music sessions on a Friday night)
  • Dungloe town - a 12-minute drive - 'Capital of the Rosses' with supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, Supervalu, The Cope), pubs (10), restaurants, take-aways
  • Maghery Beach - horse-riding on the beach - 20 mins. drive
  • Sliabh Liag - Europe's highest sea cliffs (amazing) - 45 mins. drive
  • Horse Riding at Dunlewey - 40 mins.
  • Glenveagh National Park/ National Park  - 45 mins

customer reviews for Teálta Folaigh - 'The Hide'

I can't recommend this house highly enough. It is such a beautiful space with amazing views and the stars at night were spectacular, with so little light pollution. We had a wonderful stay and were blessed with good weather. So many beaches and great walks right on your doorstep. The owners have thought of everything and you are so well set up to cook at home and truly enjoy the space. A cosy stove will help keep you toasty on a cold or rainy evening. Our dog Rufus loved the space too - very safe and lots to explore. Amazing to find such a special property that is dog friendly. Thank you Greg and Lukas! - Edel

This property is in a beautiful area of Donegal and it was a pleasure to sit in the living area with the stove lit and watch the red deer explore the woods. Greg and Lukas keep the property in perfect condition and we would definitely recommend this place to a small party looking to get away for a few days. - James

We had such a lovely and peaceful stay at the hide! Even spotted some red deer in the distance while we ate dinner! A real gem of a spot in good location for exploring different spots in Donegal and excellent tips in the file! We had everything we could have needed in the house and cooked each night, a real Home from home! We will be back next year! - Meadhbh

We absolutely loved staying at the cottage. The location was perfect with incredible views through massive picture windows - perfect for watching all the weather come in and (if you’re lucky) a great view of the stars. The nearby Dooey beach is lovely. We also loved visiting Port Noo and Carrickfinn beaches and especially the caves & waterfall at Maghera. Greg & Lukas left great advice for where to eat, drink, visit and shop. The cottage is absolutely immaculate and a really pleasing combination of modern decor with traditional touches. The cottage has all the appliances we needed, Netflix, and a very thoughtfully outfitted kitchen. Communication with hosts was fast, helpful and friendly. In short I wholeheartedly recommend staying here. It’s such a treat to be able to combine an incredible rural location with modern luxurious accommodation. Thank you Greg & Lukas - Maggie

The Hide is a very special property . The view from the cottage is stunning, the flowers and candles a lovely touch; the property was very clean and tastefully presented. We chilled within minutes of arriving. Our dog felt very welcome too!! Thank you Greg + Luka! - Serena

The house is even more spectacular and spacious than the pictures and is perfect for both a larger group spending time together and for a romantic couple getaway. I definitely recommend walking down to the shore and sitting on the little picnic table they have there. The view during high tide and low tide are both incredible and have to both be seen. We didn’t leave the house much as it was so comfy but a trip to dooey beach is close and well worth it. - George

We had a great stay. As we were only the second guests since its opening everything was new and immaculate. The large windows allowed us to watch both the sun shine and the lightening crack. We had great times on beautiful Susie’s Beach and Dooey Beach. Overall a super stay ! - Gwen

We had an absolutely splendid time at 'The Hide'. Greg at UTT could not have been more helpful and accommodating in the booking process. Annie made us feel extremely welcome and went out of her way to see that our holiday went smoothly. We cannot recommend UTT strongly enough. Michael and Caroline McLean
