about the property

Donegal Cottage on the seashore, perfect for families and dog-friendly

We purchased this property on Traighenna Bay to protect a large, unspoiled tract of land that came with it from occasional hunters - we're very fond of a herd of red deer that live in the adjacent forest and come down to the shore to eat the wrack and drink from the river.  The location suggested to us to build a simple wildlife 'hide' with huge windows overlooking wild land where the deer can be seen daily.

Like 'your' deer, you'll be able to roam acres of land from forest to shore, or 5 mins. drive to sandy beaches. The deer are seen most dawns and dusks, and if you're lucky you may also see (or more likely hear) otters on the shore. Sometimes grey seals swim right up to this quiet shoreline, but if you don't see the seals from 'your own' rocks there's a large colony at the end of Dooey beach  (5 mins) who loll about waiting for the salmon and other fish to enter the Gweebarra.

We've completely renovated and upgraded the house for summer 2020. It has three bedrooms, a wonderful, open-plan bright living space and acres of land with direct private shore access.  You're a short drive away from a number of wonderful and quiet sandy beaches, the Glenveagh National Park and just 12 minutes from Dungloe, the small 'capital' of the Rosses. You can walk to the village which has a couple of shops (open 7 days) and a couple of good pubs (one serving food).

  • Belfast City via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 35 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Knock via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 15 min.)
  • Dublin via these departure airports & Ryanair (3 hr. 25 min.)

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away)
  • Larne via Fleetwood (2 hr. 40 mins.)
  • Dublin via Holyhead/ Douglas (3 hr. 30 min.)
  • Dun Laoghaire via Holyhead (3 hr. 35 mins.)

  • Dooey Beach - 5km of sandy beach (also walking distance) - known for surfing  (5-minute drive).
  • Lettermacaward - 2km - your village with 2 shops, petrol, hairdresser, pubs (local music sessions on a Friday night)
  • Dungloe town - a 12-minute drive - 'Capital of the Rosses' with supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, Supervalu, The Cope), pubs (10), restaurants, take-aways
  • Maghery Beach - horse-riding on the beach - 20 mins. drive
  • Sliabh Liag - Europe's highest sea cliffs (amazing) - 45 mins. drive
  • Horse Riding at Dunlewey - 40 mins.
  • Glenveagh National Park/ National Park  - 45 mins
  • Belfast city - 2hr 35 mins.
  • Ardara 'Heritage Town' (cafes, pubs, tweed/weaving) - 20 mins.
  • Donegal County & Events Guide

customer reviews for Teálta Folaigh - 'The Hide'

We really enjoyed our stay at The Hide. The panoramic windows in the kitchen/sitting room are out of this world and you have the pleasure of overlooking the most beautiful view including red deer. My kids had a great time exploring outside. The house is well equipped with all the things you need. Beds are very comfortable. House is situated close to all local amenities making it a good base to explore this part of Donegal. Dooy beach and Narin are particularly gorgeous close by. We already miss the property and would love to return one day. Thanks for a memorable stay.

'The Hide' is such a special place. We had a wonderful break in donegal in very mixed weather, and that was largely down to the comfort and style of this accommodation. The open plan living kitchen area is so cosy yet so stylish, we could have sat and gazed out of those huge windows for hours on end at the ever changing Donegal light, at the deer who crept down to the shore, and at the rainbows that magically framed out view on a daily basis. We felt privileged to stay. We will be back. Thank you.

Our stay was just amazing! Thanks to Greg for all the coordination & brilliant customer service. The house is clean and has comfy beds, everything was above our expectations + really stunning views (even in bad weather). The location makes this even more attractive, as we had private access to the lagoon. Will recommend it 100%.

We had a great stay in Traighenna Bay fortunate with some amazing weather. Fantastic hosts providing loads of useful information and the property was splendid. It was well very kitted out with all we needed for our stay. The views were amazing with many sightings of red deer and some spectacular sunsets. The kids and dog loved exploring the ground and we were able to take advantage of the shoreline access by taking the Paddleboard out on the bay at high tide! We can't wait to visit again. - Declan

August 2021

This is the perfect cottage and location. Beautifully designed and so comfortable. We were blown away by the views from the cottage and spoilt for choice with the fantastic beaches nearby. We loved Dooey, Carrickfinn and Maghera. Looking forward to going back to explore all the other spots we didn’t manage to fit in this time. - Sinead

August 2021

My family including two boys aged 10 and 13 had a wonderful relaxing stay. The location is absolutely exceptional. We honestly felt like we were in the middle of knowhere, yet had access to some lovely local walks and beaches (Dooey is lovely, we even swam in the rain there), and only a 5 min drive to a shop. The area is perfectly located to explore almost all of Donegal without too far a drive. We went up to Glenveagh and down to Malin Beg from our base. We also recommend kayaking with Joe near Mount Errigal, the Slieve League cliffs, swimming/paddle boarding at Silver Strand and cave hunting at Maghera (but watch the tide!) The property is incredibly clean, well laid out, spacious, cosy and well equipped. There are comfy beds, powerful hot shower, great kitchen facilities, a woodburner for chilly evenings and glorious panoramic views of the bay and surrounding area. The boys loved going to down to the sea alone on the private land. We saw some red deer one day, as well as many different birds, butterflies and even a lizard! Our hosts were incredibly helpful with suggestions and promptly answered any questions we had. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing, trouble free break, with one of the best locations Donegal has to offer, then this place is for you. - Andrea

Cannot fault the place, or our hosts. Our stay was delayed a few times due to restrictions, and the owners have been amazing in keeping in contact throughout. We finally got to spend a weekend at this amazing home, and we were not disappointed. The setting is beautiful, just what was needed, it is so peaceful and the scenery is stunning! We were able.to enjoy the sunset one evening on the nearby rocks which was a fabulous experience. The home itself is beautifully decorated, absolutely spotless and has everything you could possibly need for a weekend away! I couldn't recommend the place enough, and I look forward to coming back. Thank you for an amazing stay! - Tina

It was so stunning to wake up to every morning. We also enjoyed exploring the surrounding area and taking some photos. We loved Dooey beach and had an evening dip! The hosts were fantastic at recommending local places to eat. The house is very well kitted out and clean. The rooms were all a good size too. Very modern shower and kitchen. We would love to visit again! Claire x
