more about La Veranda (pool & hot tub)

about the property

The most amazing Spanish party villa in Andalusia. Sleeping 20 (or more) the world’s largest cavehouse is perfect for your big family holiday – with pool and Moorish hot tub and even its own bar!

As seen on Channel 5 'Our Dream Hotel' - TV show - see inside in this short video.

Guardian Newspaper 'Top 40 Places to Stay in Europe' says

'this vast cavehouse is like the den of a rather discerning hobbit. It has seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, several reception rooms and a kitchen - and all are stuffed with antiques and art. Modern additions include an 'endless pool' (you swim against a current) and a large hot tub with views over the plateau. There are geothermal pools, wine and tapas 10 minutes' drive away.'

Luxury cavehouse featured on Channel 5's 'Our Dream Hotel' (note La Veranda is a self-catering house, not hotel - it's just as large as a small hotel!)

La Veranda is a wonderful place for a group gathering in the sun - an unforgettable house in a beautful location. It sits in a beautiful mountain landscape that enjoys c320 days of sunshine a year, in Granda province, Andalucia. It's an area known for its traditional culture and geothermal pools, but if you want to stay home you have an 'endless spa pool' (with pumps so you swim against the current) and a  large hot tub with mountain views. You can sleep up to 20 but the internal configuration still makes it suitable, and comfortable for smaller groups of 4>8 people as there are a choice of receptions of different sizes. Note we also have the adjacent rental Cueva de la Merotte if you want more space.

This video of local activities should gwhet your appetite.  Kids will love the sense of freedom (they can roam freely from the house, exploring the caves etc), the pools and the forest adventure park, or (if they wish) feeding the goats and horses with our housekeeper, Monique.

Inside you'll find an remarkable and beautiful interior in what is probably the largest cavehouse in Spain (or the world?). This ancient home, cut from the local stone has three large reception rooms, seven bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and a well-equipped kitchen. You won't be short of space inside or out.

Days out will include geothermal pools (the nearest under 10 minutes drive is 18C and free, open all year round), Moorish castles (nearest under 10 mins), archaeological museums and excavations (walk the mammoth excavation in the village) or to the many lakes. There's no need to go to the coast but you can reach beautiful beaches (or a waterpark for kids) in around 90 minutes. You can walk freely from the door, across an open unfenced landscape. Walk to the ancient Moorish watch tower on the horizon, through forestry, or take the track to nearby Orce (6km) for a meal.

travel info

People have arrived by public transport (taking overnight rains via Paris and Barcelona, and there are regular buses to the local town of Orce (6km), Galera, Huescar and Cullar. However you'll probably find you'll want a car during your stay. Luckily this area has a good choice of airports with low cost carriers. Many guests fly to Alicante/ Murcia/ Malaga/ Almeria and have a night or two on the beach first.

  • Granada - 150 km, 1hr 35mins (BA flies to London City, Easyjet flies to Gatwick)
  • Murcia - 175km, 2 hr
  • Almeria - 175 km, 2 hr (many inc. Jet2 who fly to Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, East Midlands & Newcastle)
  • Alicante - 210 km, 2hr 15 mins (note it is a little further but often has the lowest priced flights)
  • Malaga - 260km, 2hr 40 mins (Ryanair + many others)
  • Albacete - 230km, 2hr 40mins (Iberia flights only)

We can recommend a local (English-speaking, friendly) taxi guy who does airport runs to collect and return guests - arrange direct with Tony

  • Skyscanner is a good place to start looking for flights as there are a huge number of providers in this area, beyond the usual Ryanair etc. Each airport website will have a destination map so you can see who flies to your area. The roads from all airports are good, being almost all dual-carriageway, and rarely busy. Driving is much less stressful here than in the UK!

The local bus service is good, though you may find a hirecar useful. For buses this site is useful (bus to Orce, Cullar or Huescar - we may be able to arrange a pick-up if arranged in advance). Or it makes a remarkable drive from the UK. Why not ferry to Santander and then trickle down through Spain?. We've had guests stay with us in Barcelona and then take the amazing roadtrip down through Spain to stay here.

The beauty of cavehouses is they maintain a constant temperature (around 15>18C) all year round, even before heating. So no airconditioning is required. Bedding and towels are provided - just bring food and drink! There is an iron and an ironing board.

Babies - we have one cot and new mattress and one high chair in the house. Bring own bedding for cot.

  • Bedroom 2 - twin with own direct access to terrace and large en-suite shower room - off Snug
  • Bedroom 3 - single - off Snug
  • Bedroom 4 - double  - off Blue Room
  • Bedroom 5 - Family Room - very large room with one double and two singles, and woodburner - off Blue Room
  • Bedroom 6 - Double - off Kitchen

  • Salon/ Bedroom 8 - 2 x double sofabeds in the (immense) Salon - a 60' long room - off Dining
  • Bathrooms - There are a generous 6 bathrooms to the 7 bedrooms. Nobody is far from a bathroom. All the bathrooms are of a generous size and contain toilet, bidet, washbasin and shower.

  • Endless spa pool -  The pool is a top-of-the-range spa pool with spa jets and pumps so you can swim against the current (if desired). Has lighting. Children must be supervised. It is possible to use as a standard pool, without the jets and pumps (recommended for children). Note the pool is not heated so is typically only suitable for use April until November. We had a fantastic week staying in this spectacular location in rural Andalucia. The cave house gave us a fantastic base from which to explore the area and was the perfect place to enjoy a family holiday. As a group of 10 (5 couples) we had ample space to relax, with lots of lovely communal areas (such as the bar, the kitchen, the dining room) as well as the comfortable and cozy bedrooms. Eating outdoors as the sun went down was a real treat, and the hot tub and swimming pool were very welcome on the hot, hot days we had there. From the pleasant sounds of the goat herders and their flock, to the crystal clear night skies offering views of the Milky Way, this is unlike anywhere else we've ever stayed before and is packed with character and charm. We had lots of fun exploring the local area. The nearest village, Orce, is a lovely place to visit with plenty of history and a handful of cute bars and restaurants. There is a market on Tuesday mornings where you can pick up tasty local produce at a bargain price and improve your Spanish! About a mile beyond Orce is a nice outdoor swimming pool which you share with lots of fish. If you are feeling energetic, it's a spectacular walk (about 4 miles) from the house to the village directly through the valley. This route is also great for running, although in the summer months you have to get out early to avoid the heat of the sun! Further afield (but within an hour or so's drive) we really enjoyed swimming in the stunning Negratin Reservoir, had a lovely day out exploring the castle and hillside village at Velez Blanco, and loved the gorge walk and dramatic scenery at Castril. I would recommend a holiday in this part of Spain to anyone. The dramatic scenery, pretty villages, outdoor lifestyle, and slow-paced charm of daily life provide the ideal backdrop for a truly relaxing break. I would also be hard pressed to think of a better place to stay than La Veranda cave house. If you are thinking about booking this place as a family or as a group of friends, just do it - you'll have a great time! Richard

This cave house is a very special place...From the sheer size of the cave complex to the beautiful antiques that surround you in every room. Lots of thought has gone into the layout and design. There is ample space even when fully occupied and the beds are super comfortable. This is a rare opportunity to have a unique experience that most people never have the chance to see. I think it's fascinating to remember that caves are the longest inhabited dwellings on the planet. Humans have occupied these caves continuously from the dawn of time to the present day and it felt very special to be part of that continuing historical tapestry. The surrounding towns and villages are all very nice and the thermal springs and lakes are great for swimming. Congratulations on such a great achievement. We wish you all the best and hope we can visit again sometime soon.

An amazing location & totally unique house - we were a party of 9 adults and one toddler and the house was more than ample for us! Fantastic decor with so many original features - we spent hours exploring! Hot tub was super and we spent hours in there! The views and surroundings are wonderful, so peaceful and quiet - with the town of Orce 5 mins drive away with all you need! Monique the house keeper who is a few houses away was wonderful and helped us with everything we needed! Communication with the manager Yvonne was super - and she allowed us to check in early and check out later which was greatly appreciated! We cooked for 10 in the kitchen and the 2 fridges and two ovens/hobs were a brilliant edition! Couldn't recommend this place more! We would definitely visit again! Thank you for having us! Anna (Brighton, UK)

What a great house for a party! We had our Wedding Anniversary here with extended family and friends and it was just wonderful. Perfect sunny weather, the pool was great, the hot tub even better! We could easily make it an annual event and would be very happy to return - Lukas

What an amazing place. Filled with history, furnished with great care and panache. A fascinating area to explore (although beware the local archeological excavations are only open for a very limited time each year). The museum in Orce was fab. And swimming with the fishes was so cool.

We have had a lovely time at La Veranda. We had a great time at Fuen Caliente geothermal pool at Orce, and the lakes at Castril and Negratin are beautiful. We drank wine from Orce and Galera - such a great place to stay with friends! - Rob, Anna, Sheena, Jenny, Fran & John

We had an amazing and captivating time here. I really loved 'Fuen Caliente'- a giant swimming pool at Orce, natural, with fish in it. It was wonderful to swim in the blue water with the fish. I loved this place with its fantastic scenery and history - Ava, age 10

I would like to thank all of the staff at UTT for the help we had arranging our holiday at La Veranda. We had a great holiday In this beautiful and unusual property. La Veranda has a great views across the valley and is a peaceful place to stay. The cave house was comfortable and easily large enough for a big group of people to stay. We swam in the geothermal pools at Orce and Huescar. We visited Castril and Lake Negratina. There was plenty to do nearby and the house keeper Monique was very helpful and suggested other places to visit. The local markets provided us with everything we needed for our self catering holiday and nearby bars were great for tapas or meals out. We drank local wine from the bodega in Galera and watched the meteor storm in August as the sky was so clear. Inside the cave was comfortably cool and a relief from the hot August sun, at night it was great for sleeping. We would happily recommend La Veranda for a large group of friends or family. Thank you
