about the property

A secluded and rustic seventeenth century thatched cottage. The perfect place for a holiday in the heart of rural Sussex that is within 30 minutes of London and Brighton.

This beautiful Listed 17th Century Sussex house is nestled in the most secluded of spots. It is accessed through woodland, along a private track (300 yards) – so feels marvelously remote, surrounded by large gardens and a pond.

The house is comfortably furnished with beautiful antiques alongside more modern pieces. The owners were determined to use only quality materials, fixtures, and fittings in its renovation, so you will find reclaimed and antique finds (many sourced from nearby Ardingly Antiques) that look right at home alongside mid-century inspired lighting, velvet sofas, and stylish linen bedding.

There are wonderful historical details wherever you look, from the ancient beams to the original floorboards, vaulted ceilings, and an inglenook fireplace, but you’ll still enjoy excellent wifi, luxury beds, and a fully equipped farmhouse kitchen.

Sleeping eight in the winter, and ten in the summer, thanks to an additional double bed in the outside hut, this house is wonderful for relaxed groups of friends or family.

It is the perfect place for a holiday in the heart of rural Sussex. The chalky hills of the South Downs or the Ashdown forest are not far away for beautiful walks. Brighton, with its fantastic seafront and many restaurants, is within striking distance. Lewes is a 30-minute drive where you can browse the cafes and antique shops or visit the local independent cinema and you're only 35 miles from central London.

  • East Grinstead is a ten-minute drive.

  • Tulley's Farm - 5 mins away has something for all ages, from an escape room, drive-in cinema, and PYO pumpkins around Halloween.
  • Wakehurst Place, botanic gardens
  • Bluebell railway, heritage steam train
  • Sheffield Park, National Trust National trust garden, park, and woodland. Famously stunning in the autumn.
  • Ardingly Reservoir, for walking, water sports and activities.
  • Standen Hall, National trust arts and crafts family home with Morris and co interiors.
  • Nymans, National Trust house, and gardens.
  • Priest's House, 15th-century hall house, hosting a museum of Sussex folklore.

customer reviews for *NEW* Sussex House

I would highly recommend this beautiful thatched cottage to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway set within the classic English countryside. The cottage is full of character, the kitchen amazingly equipped and the bedrooms very comfortable. We were a group of 7 friends plus one baby and the space and grounds worked perfectly! The host was super responsive and gave us pointers for the local area too. Would defo stay again!

If you’re looking for a unique, grade 2 listed thatched cottage with a large country style kitchen, plenty of rustic bedrooms and a huge garden which just blends into serene woodland, accessible by a journey down a private track and no neighbours in sight - you’ve found the right place. Nice vineyards and wakehurst place within 10-15min drive, Crawley and its shops just over 10min away. Could have stayed forever!
