about the property

Great value Andalucian lakefront holiday cottage villa in Parque Natural de Castril, Granada. Sleeps 6

Set within the Sierra de Castril Natural Park, Casa Turquesa is a traditional Andalucian 'cortijo' (rural cottage) that enjoys a spectacular location with views over Lake Portillo and the surrounding mountains.

Recently restored, the property sympathetically combines traditional features with modern comforts. A 5-minute walk takes you to a secluded lakeside bathing spot with crystal clear waters that have an amazing green/azure glow from the limestone rocks. It will provide you with the best bathing of your life: it is really a special location.

The charming town of Castril with its traditional whitewashed cottages and narrow cobbled streets is a 10-minute drive or lovely 30-minute walk through the olive groves.

Casa Turquesa itself is a spacious three-bedroom cottage with a large kitchen/diner and cosy living room with traditional fireplace. The kitchen is well equipped with an oven/hob; a large fridge; and a microwave. A large dining table and corner sofa enjoy views of the lake from a full-height window. The lounge has a lovely wood-burning stove for the cooler winter evenings and comfortable armchairs and sofa. There are books, games, and jigsaws to while away the time. Upstairs there are two good sized bedrooms - one twin and one with a King size double - both enjoying views over the lake. A family bathroom comes with a new shower. The third bedroom is located on the ground floor in which a daybed can be used as either a double or two singles.

Outside there is a superb three-tier terrace equipped with dining table and loungers from which you can enjoy magnificent views over the lake and the surrounding landscape - an ideal space in which to dine, stargaze or simply laze the afternoon away.

The house is perfect if you fancy a relaxing holiday off the beaten track and want to experience the real Spain.

travel info

  • Granada - 1hr 45mins (BA flies from London City, Easyjet flies from Gatwick and Manchester)
  • Almeria - 2 hr (many, including Jet2 from Manchester, Leeds, Stansted, Edinburgh, East Midlands & Newcastle)

  • Alicante - 2hr 35mins (Ryanair, Easyjet + others)
  • Malaga - 2hr 45mins (Ryanair, Easyjet + others)

Skyscanner is a good place to start looking for flights as there are plenty of providers beyond the usual Ryanair etc. The roads from all airports are good, being almost all dual-carriageway, and rarely busy. Driving is much less stressful here than in the UK!

Or it makes a remarkable drive from the UK. Why not ferry to Santander and then trickle down through Spain?

local area

This is rural Spain at its best in which the pace of life is slow. English is rarely spoken but you will find a friendly welcome everywhere.

Walking opportunities abound in the Natural Park and can range from a pleasant stroll through the olive groves to a tough day in the high mountains. The Park is famous for wildlife, especially birds and you will enjoy great close-up views of eagles and vultures.

Summer days are hot and the cool, clear waters of the lake will prove irresistible. For the more active, canoeing, kayaking and horse riding are available in the local area.

Castril the local town is friendly and full of character. Don't miss the spectacular gorge walk, lovely swimming pool and climb to the viewpoint of Pena del Sagarado Corazon. Relax with drink and some traditional tapas in one of the many bars afterwards.

If you wish to venture further afield the city of Granada with the stunning Alhambra Palace is an easy 1.5 hours drive away and the winter ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada a similar distance.

There are geothermal springs close to Lake Negratin and prehistoric sites at Orce and Galera.

The stunning Renaissance city of Ubeda is another essential day trip.

customer reviews for Casa Turquesa

We found Casa Turquesa to be a wonderfully relaxing and quiet retreat, with fabulous views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It is clean and very tastefully decorated. We enjoyed great walks in the Sierra de Castril mountains and visiting the pleasant nearby town of Castril.

The property is newly converted with all the facilities you would expect in a UK property. Its in excellent condition. The Casa is on the end of an old farmstead complex on the edge of a cliff ( the photos don't really show that properly) so don't go if you have issues with heights & I would NOT recommend it for infants for this reason, otherwise its a little bit of Spanish perfection! The track down to the property is 'entertaining' for the last 100 metres but you cant have isolation & expect to have perfect tarmacked tracks to boot, that's part of the charm of Casa Turquesa. I watched Vultures & other raptors soaring overhead most days & with the Castril & Cazorla y Segura national parks so close this is a paradise for nature lovers. Go there. -Guest , Marcus J

October 2018

This home was the highlight of our trip. The spacious terrace over looking a picturesque serene, clear mountain lake was stunning. It take some effort to get there from Madrid with hours of winding mountain roads but it was well worth it (and part of the allure if you appreciate a good drive). The house was very recently and tastefully decorated with all the amenities you would expect from a lovely vacation home. The house was very very clean and bright and offered the feeling of perfect seclusion. Overall it was a phenomenal experience and we hope very much to one day return. Guest - Eric B
