about the property

One of the finest holiday cottages in Snowdonia, this is a true Welsh mountain holiday cottage for the family near to Dolgellau. Perfect holiday cottage for walkers and those who want a real mountain holiday in Wales!

This traditional Welsh farmhouse is tucked away at the end of its own track and overlooking the beautiful Hermon Valley, at the heart of the world-renowned walking and cycling area of Coed y Brenin Forest Park.

This ancient house has been in the same family ever since it was saved from destruction in the 1950s. Now lovingly restored, using reclaimed and sustainable materials, lime plaster, and with many of its older features uncovered, it is a peaceful and unforgettable experience.

The cottage is simple but comfortable with an open fire. At night, with only a few other houses in the valley, you can see stars as you’ve never seen before in a silence broken only by the sound of owls, and the local deer coming down from the forest to graze.

A lovely traditional cottage in stunning scenery. Perfect for Mountain Biking, as directly onto The Dragon’s Back at Coed Y Brenin.

A lovely traditional cottage in stunning scenery. Perfect for Mountain Biking, as directly onto The Dragon’s Back at Coed Y Brenin.

The girls and I had a wonderful time at Hafod y Mynydd, the location is perfect for relaxing listening to the sounds of the forest and mountain, the cottage itself is lovely, comfortable and snug and a pleasure to stay in. I thought the bedroom with the single beds was the best room in the cottage, the only thing we missed in the cottage was some tall drinking glasses for the kitchen, all in all we all had a wonderful time , thank you , regards Shane

Blissful, peaceful cottage with a stunning view. Cozy, warm and well equipped. Fantastic area - could walk the trails for years around here, and still keep discovering new ones. Plus amazing mountain rivers to swim in. This was our second stay here and we hope to return before too long. The cottage was superbly clean...

A short stay at this most beautiful cottage in a glorious location. We wanted peace and quiet, time to relax and we got just that. Thank you to the owners for making it so cosy and comfortable- especially appreciated as the weather has been wet and windy.

Our stay here was magnificent! So secluded and a beautiful escape from the city with our dog! The fireplace was perfect for cosy nights after long days of walking. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely cottage in an ideal location for tranquillity and peace. The location is out of the way but close enough to a number of places well worth a visit. We particularly enjoyed a walk up Cadair Idris and Harlech castle. There is numerous walking routes from the door so you don't even have to drive anywhere if you dont fancy it!

A beautiful, peaceful and well-equipped cottage in a stunning location. It was all we hoped for. The silence was profound, the cottage a cosy retreat and having the forest on the doorstep was wonderful. So many beautiful memories created. Thank you.

We had a lovely stay in this very cosy cottage. It was remote and quiet and we had some peaceful and relaxing walks with our dog. Many thanks.

We've stayed at many cottages in Britain and this has to be one of the best. The cottage itself is lovely and had everything we needed. The location is superb. Breakfast and dinner outside every day with wonderful views and peace. (apart from the jets!) We walked each day and loved the area. It's about 45 years since we used to go to the area and we were very fortunate to have hot sunny days with temps up to 27.In a nutshell it was perfect an we would thoroughly recommend the cottage for those seeking isolation and beauty.

This is the third time we have visited this property and it only gets better. The location is second to none, even in bad weather the views are fantastic and it is so peaceful. We went walking and mountain biking in the surrounding area and it was fantastic to come back to the warmth of this lovely cottage. The house itself is extremely comfortable and cosy. The kitchen is well equipped and there are plenty of books to read in front of the large wood burner which keeps the place very warm. The beds are comfortable and we felt very at home during our short stay. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a peaceful, out of the way place.

This cottage could not be more private, tucked away down its own quite narrow driveway. At first sight the cottage has a long history, yet inside it is very up to date, clean and comfortable - indeed the heating had been left on at a low level making it instantly warm and welcoming. Having a dog we were grateful for the tiled floors - so easy to clean after wet paws. We were also relieved to find no television! However, the wifi was excellent with a download speed of 6.5mbps - unexpected in such a remote location. But with great walks from the doorstep and a plentiful supply of books and games provided and comfy beds (with electric underblanket!) to fall into the time just flew by. All furnishings, linen and kitchenware were first class and the heating, either by electric wall heaters, gas stove or wood burner really makes this a cosy, comfortable and well-equipped place to relax. Altogether we are very placed we chose Gwel y Mynydd which is ideally situated, comfortable and good value for money.

Everything was fantastic at the cottage. We enjoyed our stay. Walked a lot with our dog, and due to the drizzle we lit the fire every day. Wow! Lovely beds!

A real treasure of a property. Away from everything and some beautiful walks. Situtated right in the mountain with fabulous views. I didn't want to come home but hope to go back soon. I have a feeling it may become a regular retreat!!! Perfect !!!

Gwel y Mynydd or Tyn y Simdde – It seems to have two names! A hidden gem, high in the hills, secluded but not too remote. Just the sound of the birds to break the silence. Walks galore from the doorstep, perfect for dogs as long as you bear in mind that the garden is not enclosed. We have just returned from a short break and did not manage to explore all the available forest walks around. The cottage is quaint and warm. Very relaxing, clean and welcoming. This was our third UTT holiday and did not disappoint. Definitely recommended. Andy and Sherry with Nan and Gryff (two Border Collies) Melton Mowbray.

What an amazing place! I've never felt more refreshed after a weekend away. Tyn y Smidde is tucked away in the middle of the park with walks to mountains, rivers, waterfalls, forests, tracks, disused goldmines etc all without even getting in the car. It was a great way to while away a few days and feel as if you'd managed to get away from everything. The cottage was great and really well-equipped and had a very toasty woodburner. The electric heated mattress was a definite bonus too. I would totally recommend this place - and what a great history!

Really beautiful tucked away cottage down little lanes and forest roads opening onto stunning views of the valley and hills beyond. Everything clean and cosy, warm and well equipped. A true 'get away from it all' cottage perfect for wildlife spotting, walks and quiet reading round the fire.

We stayed for 3 nights in May, myself, husband, daughter & her boyfriend. We absolutely loved it. It is such a special place & reading the history about it was just fantastic. You can really appreciate it was a labour of love to restore it & I'm so glad the family share this wonderful place with outsiders. It is very quiet and 'away from it all' but close enough for some lovely walks and we spent a glorious sunny day in nearby Barmouth Beach. The house has everything you need & it is really lovely and cosy. I've used UTT before and would definately recommend not only this property but the company itself. Look forward to choosing somewhere new for next year :-)

Gwel y Mynydd is a warm, cosy cottage, where it's a pleasure to come back after the walks in the welsh weather. The cottage is much nicer than the pictures on the website (some photography work should be done ;-) ): the kitchen is particularly nice and the parlour very cosy. Of course, the location is secluded enough to get very silent night. A very nice place to stay though.

A wonderful 4 night stay at this beautiful and bewitching cottage. The location is superb, with great walks from the door or short drives take you to the mountains or the coast. The cottage itself is stunning - comfortable, stylish and very well-equipped. The high-spec beds ensure an excellent nights sleep, as does the tranquility and darkness of the area. We have stayed at many cottages in Wales and this has to be one of the very best.

We were delighted by the peace and tranquility of the cottage. It was just perfect for recharging after christmas. There were many walks with our dog to enjoy. We hope to be back sometime soon. The cottage was cosy and comfortable leaving us not wanting to leave.

Fantastic cottage in a stunning location. Probably one of the best cottages we've stayed in over the past couple of years in Snowdonia.

- Andrzej J,
May 2015

We had an absolutely fantastic time. It's a beautiful building which has been tastefully updated to retain its charm and simplicity. The surroundings could scarcely be improved either. Wonderful unspoilt forest, valleys and hills which made for excellent walking for ourselves and our wee dog! If you're looking to get away from the world, have some peace and quiet, and see some nature, I have yet to find a better spot than here. The book detailing the renovation work and history was a fantastic surprise too, we really loved that the story behind the cottage was being kept alive.

- Emmet O,

'We had three days of secluded bliss at this cottage, a beautifully restored stone cottage in the welsh fields, without the sniff of a neighbour nearby! It was wonderfully equipped with all you could need and we enjoyed walks and bike trails from your doorstep (watch out for the steep hill on the way back!). We will be recommending to families and friends and hope to be back to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in the summer!' Emma and Matt, Chester (April 2012)

July 2014

We stayed in the cottage over Christmas and we absolutely loved it. The location is beautiful and quiet, but just a few minutes walk away there are fantastic walks, stunning waterfalls, and great mountain bike tracks. The house is lovely with a lot of attention to detail (Marit even decorated it with some Christmas themed decoration, which was really sweet!) and comfort. We’re really looking forward to coming back! Matt and Sam, Manchester (December 2011)
