about the property

Priced for up to 4 staying (sleeps 5), one of our longest-advertised cottages high in the Coed-y-Brenin forest!

The name 'Ty'n y Simdde' tells a story; it is likely altered over the centuries from 'Tyddyn Y Simddeiau' - 'Smallholding [with] the Chimneys') from back in the days when having two chimneys was something the neighbours would have noticed and talked about, given that most would have still lived in chimneyless homes c1700 when it was constructed on the Nannau estate above Llanfachreth/ Dolgellau.

Today this classic 'Snowdonia house' is tucked away at the end of its own track and overlooking the beautiful Hermon Valley, at the heart of the world-renowned walking and cycling area of Coed y Brenin Forest Park. You really feel like you're UP the mountain here and have views to Cader Idris. There's a great visitor centre with cafe in the forest park, you can hire mountain bikes (it is Britain's first mountain-bike centre) and there's a play park for kids by the waterfalls.

Inside it is simple, basic even, but in the most remarkable mountain location - this is real Eryri / Snowdonia.  It has two good sized bedrooms (one with King, one with Double and Single). Perfect for walkers!

customer reviews for Tyn Y Simdde

We have had a wonderful cosy weekend at Tyn Y Simdde. It was peaceful and picturesque, we loved the seclusion, the garden and the nearby forest walks. We think it would be helpful if the wifi was fixed and if there was something to play the great selection of DVDs that were provided. Thank you for the provisions, it was a nice touch. Another memorable break with UTT.

We've stayed at Tyn y Simdde several times - it's a privilege to be able to stay in such a beautiful place with a real sense of history full of original features. We love its simplicity while appreciating the proper heating and being able to curl up by the fire after a chilly day walking the hills. Thanks for the treats on arrival.

This is our second visit and as before it was the perfect escape from everyday life. We cycled and walked. The kids were revising for upcoming exams so the WiFi was very handy.

Wonderfully simple stone cottage, tucked into the hillside high above the Forest. Cosy, peaceful and with everything you need for a restful stay. Dolgellau is not far for supplies (TH Hughes for cake, Roberts the Butchers for Sausages and the Popty’r Dref for the legendary honey buns) We managed a challenging but magnificent walk up Cadar Idris as well as walks straight out the Front door. We will be back for some more of the Tyn y Simdde magic.

Had a fabulous holiday despite the persistent rain in a very well equipped and clean cottage halfway up the mountain with glorious views. Couldn't have wanted anything else, everything was fully catered for. Thank you very much we hope to see you again.

Our second lucky time to stay at beautiful Tyn Y Simdde. The cottage once again gave us the best welcome hug you can ask for and that hug held us in a perfect peaceful state of being throughout our stay. I can't really find the words for the feeling the cottage gives us, but simply love it! Wonderful walks from the cottage, fantastic stars at night. I want to stay here forever! Thank you Tyn Y Simdde.

We had a wonderful stay at Tyn-y-Simdde! Such a lovely cottage and beautifully clean and well-restored. We enjoyed reading about the history of the cottage and the reviews in the guest books from others who had stayed! Comfy beds and furnishings, the shower was good and the kitchen had pretty much everything we needed. We were so cosy with the wood burner lit and didn't want to leave. We enjoyed the lovely views from the cottage and the autumn light and colourful trees on the drive up were gorgeous. Bruce, the cocker spaniel, had a fabulous time running around the forestry nearby too. A very special place and a relaxing family getaway.

The directions to cottage were accurate unfortunately there was a road closed however the diversion signs were well placed and easy to follow. The small road leading to the cottage is well maintained and the cottage is accessed by well signposted slightly bumpy track. Ample parking and turning room outside the cottage with lovely views across the valley. Access into the cottage as described with no problems with the code. Both bedrooms are well presented, we decided to use the slightly smaller room as we had a slight concern about the two steps down from the room when visiting the bathroom at night which is directly opposite on the landing. The bed was very comfortable. Bathroom is very well presented and the shower very good. The kitchen, dining area and lounge on the ground floor are in effect a large open plan area which works very well. Gives the impression of a large spacious living area which is unusual for most cottages as these room are usually divided by walls. Kitchen is very well equipped and can’t think of any item we thought should be there. Good size six seater dining table. Two comfy sofas in the lounge are adjacent to the large fireplace with log burner. A starter pack of logs was very useful as we unfortunately had a bad spell of em weather which turned a bit chilly in the evening. There is central heating although it wasn’t on during our stay. We understand this as two weeks earlier the country had its hottest every September temperatures recorded! The outdoor space is quite large and a well placed picnic table, weather permitting, offers impressive views. Overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable seven night stay and intend to return

Wonderful cottage in fantastic, remote and scenic location. Very comfortable, well equipped and welcoming. A true gem. Gorgeous views from garden, many walks from the door and further afield. Perfect for family of four and dog. Plenty of hot water, excellent shower. Attention to detail appreciated, lots of books provided and details of walks. WiFi workeworked well. Landline available for incoming calls. Had a very enjoyable week. Highly recommend.

We stayed here for a long weekend. Beautiful cottage with idyllic scenery and very peaceful if you want to get away from it all.

- Kim M,

An idyllic spot which we used as a base for some beautiful local rambles followed by cosy fireside evenings. A walk to the east over the summit of Rhobell Fawr and back was particularly rewarding. The garden is fenced and gated which enabled us to let our dog wander freely within the grounds. There is a public footpath running across the garden although we saw no-one use it during our six day stay. The dawn chorus was beautiful and we were serenaded by a woodcock at dusk. What's not to like? We hope to be back again soon.

We had a wonderful time staying at the cottage. It is lovely and secluded with amazing views over the valley and fab walks from the front door. We will be recommending to others

The property yet again is a joy to stay in and the surrounding countryside is so peaceful and full of birds and animals alike. Thank you for providing such a lovely property to stay in and we will definitely be back

What a wonderful place to stay when adventuring in this part of Wales. I loved sitting in the window seat looking out on the countryside and watching the weather change and the birds frequent the garden. Tyn Y Simdde is a glorious haven and perfect for a small family. We were delighted that there was no television and our children (aged 5 and 7) took full advantage of being able to roam freely outside. Sound carries around the property and the bathroom is a bit of squeeze but we would certainly visit again - the quiet at night is quite magical. Thank you, it was a wonderful break.

We has such a wonderful time at the cottage. Reading about the history of the cottage and the area, we felt like we stepped back in time. The owners were super nice to us too, offering to take us from Machynleth to the cottage (as we arrived by train and were planning to take a local taxi). The nature around the cottage is unbelievably breathtaking. We were even lucky to have snow for the entire duration of our stay - just perfect for our 2 year old. We will make sure to be back.

- Mona M,

A wonderfully remote cottage with numerous walks from the doorstep. Don't expect luxury as it is quite basic but there is everything you need for a comfortable stay and the tranquility is restorative.

- Rebecca L,

Great stay. Amazing location, lovely welcome pack. Beds comfortable. Great local info at the property. Plenty hot water. Only recommendation is quite a few of the plates and crockery were chipped and need to be replaced. Property would benefit from some prosecco glasses and a supply of tin foil would help for when using the grill. Otherwise loved it. Thanks.

Wonderful holiday, so peaceful, lots of wildlife idilic location. Mountain bike trails within 200metres of the door. Lovely walks from the door too. Our dog absolutely loved it she was very settled. Our teenager was a bit stroppy when finding out there was no TV but soon got used to it and also had a wonderful time, was an expert croquet player by the end of the week !! We absolutely loved it in the chimney house and I will definitely return one day . Thank you Claire David Taylor and Poppy x

- Claire W,

This was such a beautiful location in the heart of snowdonia, the house was sensitively restored with plenty of walks just on our doorstep. My only criticism is that the owners could be a little more generous with their wood, salt and pepper supply :-)

- Amanda D,
2022

We had a wonderful stay. Each day we walked in a different direction from the front door, no driving needed all week and we experienced the most incredible scenery wherever we walked. We returned to tea and cake sitting at the outside table, watching nature all around!

After a marathon 6 hour drive we arrived exhausted to, what for us turned out to be a paradise Christmas break. Thank you to the owner who left some logs, put up a tree and messaged prior to arrival, it’s great to know there is contact if needed. This cottage set on a hill, nestled in the forest is so secluded from our hectic world . Warm, cosy, meticulously clean and comfortable are obvious descriptive words in a review that most will look for, but what made our stay even more wonderful was this cottages reluctance to be part of the connected world. My job means I am constantly tapped into the goings on of the company I work for, even on holiday I never quite get away from my responsibilities, as a result I pay to relax for a week or two and never quite manage it. This week was different, mobile reception for us was non existent in the cottage (there is a landline for emergencies) I managed to get one bar and at times even two in the garden or on a walk but never quite enough to make more than a quick call to thank relatives for presents and let them know we were alive. There is Wi-Fi for those really intent on knowing what’s going on in the outside world, but who needs it when in such an idyllic location. Our week was filled with long walks with the dog, meals at the table and relaxing on the sofa, complexions glowing from the warmth of the fire. If I was asked to use one word for our stay it would be “special”. I return to the rat run refreshed, relaxed and longing to return, I can wholeheartedly recommend this blissful piece of heaven.

A lovely traditional cottage in stunning scenery. Perfect for Mountain Biking, as directly onto The Dragon’s Back at Coed Y Brenin.

- Jane R,

The girls and I had a wonderful time at Hafod y Mynydd, the location is perfect for relaxing listening to the sounds of the forest and mountain, the cottage itself is lovely, comfortable and snug and a pleasure to stay in. I thought the bedroom with the single beds was the best room in the cottage, the only thing we missed in the cottage was some tall drinking glasses for the kitchen, all in all we all had a wonderful time , thank you , regards Shane

Blissful, peaceful cottage with a stunning view. Cozy, warm and well equipped. Fantastic area - could walk the trails for years around here, and still keep discovering new ones. Plus amazing mountain rivers to swim in. This was our second stay here and we hope to return before too long. The cottage was superbly clean...

A short stay at this most beautiful cottage in a glorious location. We wanted peace and quiet, time to relax and we got just that. Thank you to the owners for making it so cosy and comfortable- especially appreciated as the weather has been wet and windy.

Lovely cottage in an ideal location for tranquillity and peace. The location is out of the way but close enough to a number of places well worth a visit. We particularly enjoyed a walk up Cadair Idris and Harlech castle. There is numerous walking routes from the door so you don't even have to drive anywhere if you dont fancy it!

- Charlotte W,

A beautiful, peaceful and well-equipped cottage in a stunning location. It was all we hoped for. The silence was profound, the cottage a cosy retreat and having the forest on the doorstep was wonderful. So many beautiful memories created. Thank you.

We had a lovely stay in this very cosy cottage. It was remote and quiet and we had some peaceful and relaxing walks with our dog. Many thanks.

- David C,

We've stayed at many cottages in Britain and this has to be one of the best. The cottage itself is lovely and had everything we needed. The location is superb. Breakfast and dinner outside every day with wonderful views and peace. (apart from the jets!) We walked each day and loved the area. It's about 45 years since we used to go to the area and we were very fortunate to have hot sunny days with temps up to 27.In a nutshell it was perfect an we would thoroughly recommend the cottage for those seeking isolation and beauty.

- George Y,

This is the third time we have visited this property and it only gets better. The location is second to none, even in bad weather the views are fantastic and it is so peaceful. We went walking and mountain biking in the surrounding area and it was fantastic to come back to the warmth of this lovely cottage. The house itself is extremely comfortable and cosy. The kitchen is well equipped and there are plenty of books to read in front of the large wood burner which keeps the place very warm. The beds are comfortable and we felt very at home during our short stay. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a peaceful, out of the way place.

Everything was fantastic at the cottage. We enjoyed our stay. Walked a lot with our dog, and due to the drizzle we lit the fire every day. Wow! Lovely beds!

- Mark V,

A real treasure of a property. Away from everything and some beautiful walks. Situtated right in the mountain with fabulous views. I didn't want to come home but hope to go back soon. I have a feeling it may become a regular retreat!!! Perfect !!!

- Lynn G,

A hidden gem, high in the hills, secluded but not too remote. Just the sound of the birds to break the silence. Walks galore from the doorstep, perfect for dogs as long as you bear in mind that the garden is not enclosed. We have just returned from a short break and did not manage to explore all the available forest walks around. The cottage is quaint and warm. Very relaxing, clean and welcoming. This was our third UTT holiday and did not disappoint. Definitely recommended. Andy and Sherry with Nan and Gryff (two Border Collies) Melton Mowbray.

- Lisa F,

Really beautiful tucked away cottage down little lanes and forest roads opening onto stunning views of the valley and hills beyond. Everything clean and cosy, warm and well equipped. A true 'get away from it all' cottage perfect for wildlife spotting, walks and quiet reading round the fire.

- Rachel S,

We stayed for 3 nights in May, myself, husband, daughter & her boyfriend. We absolutely loved it. It is such a special place & reading the history about it was just fantastic. You can really appreciate it was a labour of love to restore it & I'm so glad the family share this wonderful place with outsiders. It is very quiet and 'away from it all' but close enough for some lovely walks and we spent a glorious sunny day in nearby Barmouth Beach. The house has everything you need & it is really lovely and cosy. I've used UTT before and would definately recommend not only this property but the company itself. Look forward to choosing somewhere new for next year :-)

- Lusia suszek ,

Gwel y Mynydd is a warm, cosy cottage, where it's a pleasure to come back after the walks in the welsh weather. The cottage is much nicer than the pictures on the website (some photography work should be done ;-) ): the kitchen is particularly nice and the parlour very cosy. Of course, the location is secluded enough to get very silent night. A very nice place to stay though.

- Struzik ,
2016

A wonderful 4 night stay at this beautiful and bewitching cottage. The location is superb, with great walks from the door or short drives take you to the mountains or the coast. The cottage itself is stunning - comfortable, stylish and very well-equipped. The high-spec beds ensure an excellent nights sleep, as does the tranquility and darkness of the area. We have stayed at many cottages in Wales and this has to be one of the very best.

- Jodie L,

- Elaine F,

We were delighted by the peace and tranquility of the cottage. It was just perfect for recharging after christmas. There were many walks with our dog to enjoy. We hope to be back sometime soon. The cottage was cosy and comfortable leaving us not wanting to leave.

Fantastic cottage in a stunning location. Probably one of the best cottages we've stayed in over the past couple of years in Snowdonia.

- Andrzej J,
2015

We had an absolutely fantastic time. It's a beautiful building which has been tastefully updated to retain its charm and simplicity. The surroundings could scarcely be improved either. Wonderful unspoilt forest, valleys and hills which made for excellent walking for ourselves and our wee dog! If you're looking to get away from the world, have some peace and quiet, and see some nature, I have yet to find a better spot than here. The book detailing the renovation work and history was a fantastic surprise too, we really loved that the story behind the cottage was being kept alive.

- Emmet O,

'We had three days of secluded bliss at this cottage, a beautifully restored stone cottage in the welsh fields, without the sniff of a neighbour nearby! It was wonderfully equipped with all you could need and we enjoyed walks and bike trails from your doorstep (watch out for the steep hill on the way back!). We will be recommending to families and friends and hope to be back to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in the summer!' Emma and Matt, Chester (April 2012)

We stayed in the cottage over Christmas and we absolutely loved it. The location is beautiful and quiet, but just a few minutes walk away there are fantastic walks, stunning waterfalls, and great mountain bike tracks. The house is lovely with a lot of attention to detail (Marit even decorated it with some Christmas themed decoration, which was really sweet!) and comfort. We’re really looking forward to coming back! Matt and Sam, Manchester (December 2011)
