about the property

A modernist hillside villa overlooking Traighenna Bay in Donegal - Priced for 2, sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (all en-suite)

A contemporary home on a hillside overlooking the Atlantic ocean, designed by Keith Makinson RIBA, a retired Transport for London architect.  The house is elevated on stilts over a beautiful piece of granite bedrock worn smooth by centuries of icebergs that rocked into this bay after the last ice age. It is formed around two recycled shipping containers with huge sheets of glazing to enjoy the views.

Built in 2017, this remarkable villa enjoys tremendous open views over Traighenna Bay. Three large bedrooms (each en-suite) mean that the place can sleep up to 6 in comfort. There are 5 acres of rough mountain land - walk up your own steep land to the top of the hill, or along the quiet road to the shoreline (1km flat walk, 15 mins). 5 minutes in the car (or 3km flat walk) to tremendous sandy beaches including Dooey.  We let it for up to 90 nights a year when the owner is away.

Days out will include beaches, Glenveagh National Park (you can see it from the house) and the dramatic sea cliffs at Slieve League.

travel info

You can easily fly by low-cost carrier but we prefer the greener (and nicer) route by ferry with your own car. Ireland is such an amazing country, and you'll find so much to do and see 'en route'.

Note Aer Lingus often have deals as cheap as Ryanair/ Easyjet and fly to 15 UK airports

Flights? Note that Northern Ireland is closer than, say, Dublin.

  • Donegal - flights to Dublin (25-minute fabulous coastal drive to the house)
  • Derry (Londonderry) via Glasgow, Liverpool (with Ryanair) and London City (BMI) 1hr. 25 mins. away) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast International via these departure airports & Easyjet & Ryanair (2 hr. 25 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast City via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 35 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Knock via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 15 min.)
  • Dublin via these departure airports & Ryanair (3 hr. 25 min.) - often best value but a bit more of a drive than from Belfast

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away) - probably the best option if travelling from UK with pets
  • Larne via Fleetwood (2 hr. 40 mins.)
  • Dublin via Holyhead/ Douglas (3 hr. 30 min.) - often lowest cost, most regular crossings, but less easy with pets
  • Rosslare via Fishguard/ Pembroke Dock (5 hr. 15 mins and an amazing drive)
(Tip - ferries cheapest Mon>Thu or with Camping & Caravan Club membership)

  • Dungloe town - 15 minute drive - 'Capital of the Rosses' with supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, Supervalu, The Cope), pubs (10)
  • Portnoo Beach - horse-riding on the beach - 20 mins. drive

  • Horse Riding at Dunlewey - 40 mins.
  • Glenveagh National Park/ National Park  - 45 mins
