about the property

Architect's beach home at Dooey, West Donegal. Priced for 2, can sleep 6 in three bedrooms.

A contemporary beach home at Dooey beach, walkable from the shore.

Built 8 years ago, this smart contemporary beach home is at Dooey - celebrated as one of the best Blue Flag beaches in Ireland. We let it for a few months a year when the owner works away.

The 'shack' is inspired by timber Tasmanian beach homes, but this one is fully insulated beyond modern standards and very comfortable all year round with three good-sized bedrooms, two excellent shower rooms and a deck to view the bay.  Walk down to the sandy shore (850 metres, 13 minutes) and explore one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe.

Dooey beach is 20 20-minute walk (exactly one mile by foot or vehicle on a quiet single-track road). The village (5 mins drive, 4km) has three bars (one serving good food, one that welcomes dogs), two shops and a petrol station open 7 days to 9pm.

travel info

You can easily fly by low-cost carrier but we prefer the greener (and nicer) route by ferry with your own car. Ireland is such an amazing country, and you'll find so much to do and see 'en route'.

Note Aer Lingus often have deals as cheap as Ryanair/ Easyjet and fly to 15 UK airports

Flights? Note that Northern Ireland is closer than, say, Dublin.

  • Donegal - flights to Dublin (25-minute fabulous coastal drive to the cottage)
  • Derry (Londonderry) via Glasgow, Liverpool (with Ryanair) and London City (BMI) 1hr. 25 mins. away) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast International via these departure airports & Easyjet & Ryanair (2 hr. 25 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Belfast City via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 35 mins.) - good for Giant's Causeway
  • Knock via these departure airports & Ryanair (2 hr. 15 min.)
  • Dublin via these departure airports & Ryanair (3 hr. 25 min.) - often best value but a bit more of a drive than from Belfast

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away) - probably the best option if travelling from UK with pets
  • Larne via Fleetwood (2 hr. 40 mins.)
  • Dublin via Holyhead/ Douglas (3 hr. 30 min.) - often lowest cost, most regular crossings, but less easy with pets
  • Rosslare via Fishguard/ Pembroke Dock (5 hr. 15 mins and an amazing drive)
(Tip - ferries cheapest Mon>Thu or with Camping & Caravan Club membership)

in detail

Centrally heated (included) and WIFI (good enough for WhatsApp, Netflix, Zoom etc). Excellent phone signal on '3' and some other networks

Living space: with double height ceiling comprising of:

Dining area for 6 (there's also a picnic bench for 6 on the deck)

Lounge with TV and woodburner (first basket of l ogs supplied)

Utility with washing machine (no dryer but there is a drying line on the veranda)

Principle Bedroom & En-Suite Shower room, with SuperKing bed, excellent mattress (as all). Desk. Sea views.

Bedroom 2 - KingSize bed and desk - views over fields to rear (our favourite of the views!)

Bedroom 3 - Double bed and desk, sea views

Jack & Jill shower room - enterable (and lockable) direct from Bedrooms 2 and 3 and also the main living space (it's positioned between bedrooms 2 and 3).

Outside: the house is set in one acre of mostly wild grass (some lovely wild orchids in May). Note the boundaries aren't all enclosed so although there's a lot of land a determined dog could wander (though not to where animals graze).

  • Covered veranda with picnic bench and lounge chairs (2)

Travel cot (bring own bedding), high chair and baby bath at the property - no need to request

local area

You're right on one of the most beautiful shorelines in the world. Most people spend their days discovering the many beaches (there are hundreds, literally), the great local food and welcome in the pubs, and walking across wilderness landscapes.

  • Shoreline - 850 metre walk, 13 minutes - SurfsUp ireland can arrange paddle-board tuition from Susan's Beach
  • Dooey Beach - 3km of sandy beach (also walking distance, one mile by foot or car) - known for surfing (arrange lessons/ join summer surf 'camps' via SurfsUp Ireland).
  • Lettermacaward - 5 minute drive - your village with 2 shops, petrol, hairdressers, pubs (one serves good food 7 days a week to 9pm)
  • Dungloe town - 15 minute drive - 'Capital of the Rosses' with supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, Supervalu, The Cope), pubs (10)
  • Portnoo Beach - horse-riding on the beach - 20 mins. drive
  • Sliabh Liag - Europe's highest sea cliffs (amazing) - 45 mins. drive
  • Horse Riding at Dunlewey - 40 mins.
  • Glenveagh National Park/ National Park  - 45 mins
  • Belfast city - 2hr 45 mins.
  • Ardara 'Heritage Town' (cafes, pubs, tweed/weaving) - 20 mins.
  • Local angling, boat trips & local walking (video)
  • Glencolmcille Folk Village & beach & pubs - 55 mins.
  • Ulster Folk Park - one of best open air museums in Europe - 1hr 20 mins.
  • Derry ('Londonderry') - fascinating UK City of Culture 2013 -  1 hr. 20 mins.
  • Giant's Causeway - 2 hr 10 mins - or also see Derry on the way

A wonderful place. The quiet, beautiful location was amazing and the views throughout the day were enthralling. The house was very clean, warm and brilliantly presented. The design of the house is an architectural gem in this part of Ireland. The walks to the local beaches were always quiet. Susan’s Beach is a great spot to paddle board and swim. Dooey beach is amazing for the views and quietness. A great stay in beautiful Donegal. - John
